About this listen

November 1866: The grisly murder site in London's East End is thronged with onlookers. None of them expect the calmly efficient young woman among them to be a medical doctor, arrived to examine the corpse. Inspector Richard Tennant, overseeing the investigation, at first makes no effort to disguise his skepticism. But Dr. Julia Lewis is accustomed to such condescension . . .

To study medicine, Julia had to leave Britain, where universities still bar their doors to women, and travel to America. She returned home to work in her grandfather's practice—and to find London in the grip of a devastating cholera epidemic. In four years, however, she has seen nothing quite like this—a local clergyman's body sexually mutilated and displayed in a manner that she—and Tennant—both suspect is personal.

Days later, another body is found with links to the first, and Tennant calls in Dr. Lewis again. The murderer begins sending the police taunting letters and tantalizing clues—though the trail leads in multiple directions. Lewis and Tennant struggle to understand the killer's dark obsessions and motivations. But there is new urgency, for the doctor's role appears to have shifted from expert to target. And this killer is no impulsive monster, but a fiendishly calculating opponent, determined to see his plan through to its terrifying conclusion . . .

Excellent book!

I thoroughly enjoyed this well constructed victorian mystery! The story was complex and engaging, as were the characters. The narration was well done too. I would highly recommend it for fans of Andrea Penrose's Wrexford and Sloane series. I can't wait for the next one to come out.

Not great

I stuck with this despite wanting to quit several times. It just dragged. I think the writing just didn’t engage me with the characters.
I also had a hard time with the narrator’s voice, although I’ve listened to other titles with this narrator that we’re fine.

Close to a good story.

Why do authors insist on detailed descriptions of child abuse/rape? It can be alluded to and achieve the same effect. Had to skip through most of the chapter which revealed the killer’s backstory.

Made me curious

If the goal of a murder mystery is to keep you guessing, this book succeeds. It’s not in my genre, but I found myself curious about what would happen next, why the murders were taking place, and what the main characters would do (they are oddly engaging—stilted at first, but they grow on you). The author teaches a lot about London at this time, all which adds life to the tale with few encumbrances. Great performance; lively and varied accents. One or two places where the characters voices were too similar to determine who was who in a dialogue. Recommended.

A well researched story about a professional woman in Victorian England and the difficulties she faces to live her dream

Well wriiten. The characters were well fleshed out. I liked the narrator quite a bit after a slightly rocky start. Gripping enough to hold my interest for over 10 hours.

Well done.

Thank you for a delightful and interesting Victorian mystery. I enjoyed the interchanges between the main female character and the main male character. The social challenges of the time are difficult to read about and so I will take a break before I read the next one in the series. They are heartwrenching and wear my spirit down. However, truth is truth and we mustn't turn away from truth when it presents itself as ugly and horrifying. Happy writing. Cheers.
