About this listen

From Hugo and Audie Award-winning author John Scalzi comes an exciting sequel to the New York Times best-selling, number one Audible hit The Dispatcher, performed by the incomparable Zachary Quinto.

Welcome to the new world, in which murder is all but a thing of the past. Because when someone kills you, 999 times out of 1,000, you instantly come back to life. In this world, there are dispatchers - licensed killers who step in when you’re at risk of a natural or unintentional death. They kill you - so you can live.

Tony Valdez is used to working his job as a dispatcher within the rules of the law and the state. But times are tough, and more and more Tony finds himself riding the line between what’s legal and what will pay his bills. After one of these shady gigs and after being a witness to a crime gone horribly wrong, Tony discovers that people around him are dying, for reasons that make no sense...and which just may implicate him.

Tony is running out of time: to solve the mystery of these deaths, to keep others from dying, and to keep himself from being a victim of what looks like murder, by other means.

Did not like this book quite as much as the first but it was still awesome. Mr Quinto - excellent narration ! Book 3 here I come!

Once again interesting story by this author.

Read alone, or after the first. Last one I reviewed I mentioned that I hoped there would be more, and there was. :) perhaps there’s more yet? Nice brain candy, again.

Too short!

I would love to see a full length novel in this world! It's over too soon

Intriguing, good, doesn't overstay it's welcome

This is another satisfying little Dispatcher story. It's long enough to carry weight and short enough not to drag. I didn't predict where it was going. The main character is a fun beaten down underdog type. The little glimpses of the world and the mechanics of how the setting's central concept impacts it are interesting. Zachary Quinto has a solid narrator voice.

Great story, great performance

I got hook on the first book and while it’s not as good as the first one, it’s still very intriguing and a good mystery story

I only wish it was longer.

Great story and narration. A wierd concept that works. I hope there are more in the series.

Excellent storytelling and voice narration!

I loved this better than the first book. The twists and turns are reminiscent of Dashiell Hammett books but modernized.

The Evolution of the Gumshoe Detective Story

I enjoyed this book as much as its predecessor, The Dispatcher (which you should listen to first). The snarky humour reminds me of gumshoe detective novels, complete with swamy thugs, murders that are not murders, and intriguing plot twists. A compelling story, well told, and excellently voiced by Quinto. Full marks!

Interesting second instalment

The Dispatcher series comes with an interesting premise and this second book tries to flesh out that premise, while adding to our hero’s character and surroundings. They’re quick listens, but I wish the big reveal at the end wasn’t so rushed. Zachary Quinto with another good job here, too.

Thoroughly Enjoyable

Loved the story and the narration. Off to see if there's another Scalzi book set in this world. I really hope there is.
