About this listen
Trading in Texas heat for Maine's tangy salt air, Natalie Barnes risked it all to buy the Gray Whale Inn, a quaint bed and breakfast on Cranberry Island. She adores whipping up buttery muffins and other rich breakfast treats for her guests until Bernard Katz checks in. The overbearing land developer plans to build a resort next door where an endangered colony of black-chinned terns is nesting. Worried about the birds, the inevitable transformation of the sleepy fishing community, and her livelihood, Natalie takes a public stand against the project. But the town board sides with Katz. Just when it seems like things can't get any worse, Natalie finds Katz dead. Now the police and much of the town think she's guilty. Can Natalie track down the true killer before she's hauled off to jail...or becomes the next victim?

UPDATE to: The narrator distracted me incessantly from the story!
I wanted to enjoy this cozy little murder mystery set on a little island in Maine; but the over enunciation by the narrator, especially when one word ended on a consonant and the next word began with a consonant, was just way overboard! So much so that it was a relief to me when the book was over; and I'm not really sure who dunit or why! I will steer clear of this narrator because she ruined this story for me. Reminded me of my sister's Grade 4 teacher who constantly preached, "E-nun-ci-ate!" Except so much worse!
UPDATE: I read the subsequent 2 novels in this series, which are both done with a new narrator, Rebecca Mitchell, and she was an excellent narrator, a wonderful improvement! I was able to enjoy Books 2 and 3 in this series of cozy little murder mysteries!
