Publisher's Summary

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Children on the Hill, a psychological thriller “that delivers both chilling scares and genuine emotion” (Chandler Baker, New York Times bestselling author) about a woman who, after taking in her dying, alcoholic mother, begins to suspect demonic possession is haunting her family.

Alison has never been a fan of Christmas. But with it right around the corner and her husband busily decorating their cozy Vermont home, she has no choice but to face it. Then she gets the call.

Mavis, Alison’s estranged mother, has been diagnosed with cancer and has only weeks to live. She wants to spend her remaining days with her daughter’s family. But Alison grew up with her mother’s alcoholism and violent abuse and is reluctant to unearth these traumatic memories. Still, she eventually agrees to take in Mavis, hoping that she and her mother can finally heal and have the relationship she’s always dreamed of.

But when mysterious and otherworldly things start happening upon Mavis’s arrival, Alison begins to suspect her mother is not quite who she seems. And as the holiday festivities turn into a nightmare, she must confront just how far she is willing to go to protect her family in this “twisty, propulsive, character-drive, and hair-raisingly scary” (Nick Cutter, author of The Troop) novel.

Got good towards the end!

Slow start for the first half of the book, but the second half was great! It was hard to put down towards the end, and had a great story. I enjoyed the narration as well and thought the voices were spot on

Was this read by AI?!

I love this author but what the heck is with the author?! Painful to listen to. Sounds like bad AI is reading it most of the time. Monotone and weird sounding 3/4 of the time. Still trying to power through it so as not to have to buy the book on top of wasting a credit on it.

Feel Free To Pass

Once it gets going, this Jennifer McMahon story about demonic possession is sufficiently creepy to provide satisfactory entertainment.. even while providing a disappointingly straightforward screenplay-like plot.
Unfortunately, she populates the tale with groanworthy clichéd characters (lesbian couples running organic farms & artisanal weed businesses, for example). The Millenial/GenZ hipster douchebags, Wiccan New-agers, and omnipresent "why is this character homosexual?" gays surrounding a Hollywood stereotype family (emotionally-damaged/loving mom & skeptical dad; rebellious teenager; cutesy 6-year-old) were strikingly unsympathetic. Even with decent writing and atmospheric description, I could not care less what happened to any of these 2-dimensional cardboard-cutout figures.

Luckily for audiobook consumers: Hilary Huber turns in one of her finest performances (I'm not sure what other reviewers are talking about when they pan the narration). True, a couple of character interpretations are irritating (Teenage Goth daughter "Izzy" is over-the-top snarky, for example).. but Huber's professional diction, timbre, and cadence are paired with a spot-on emotive tone. Kitty Hendrix's contribution is likewise above-average.

Altogether, 'My Darling Girl' rates 4.5 stars out of 10. Despite commendable listening quality and some great - if unoriginal - horror imagery, it was a disappointingly uncaptivating waste of time. Even if you can get it as a free 'Plus' option, you should keep browsing.
