About this listen

'Packed full of secrets and lies, Saxon succeeds in putting the 'creep' in creepy.' Valerie Keogh

Four sisters, four secrets. Who has the deadliest of them all?

Something happened to me when I was nine.

My childhood memories before that fateful day are gone. Extinguished.

The aftermath has become a living nightmare, with a guilt that runs so deep, I'm not sure I can ever tell anyone. I fear I've left it too late...

The burden of my secret and the hurt and pain that silence cost each and every member of my family is too overwhelming.

But you can't avoid fate and now I have the opportunity to right the wrongs inflicted on us.

There was no justice. Not then. Not now. But I can change that.

The big question is, how far am I willing to go?

Bestselling author Diane Saxons immersive thriller will have you debating how far you would go for your family to right a wrong… Perfect for fans of Freida McFadden and Shari Lapena.

'An unputdownable, tense, fast-paced, terrifying plot that deftly twists and turns.' Danielle Ramsay

'An intensely dark thriller’ Ross Greenwood

'A complex, dark and disturbing thriller, full of intrigue, toxic relationships and jaw-dropping twists.' Alex Stone

'Gripping... I couldn't put it down' Gemma Rogers

Striking Realism

Every single life event in this Diane Saxon offering about four sisters with "skeletons in their closets" and real-time stressors (alcoholism, post-dates pregnancy, unfaithful husbands, etc.) feels remarkably true-to-life. To be certain, rape, pedophilia, and murder are included in Saxon's list of events for exploration (captivating despite some overwhelming/depressing melodrama), but too much of the book is occupied with character establishment/development. Saxon's dedication to authenticity is a double-edged sword: On the plus side, the verisimilitude prompts visceral empathy (readers/listeners can easily feel what the characters are experiencing).. but it also sentences day-to-day relationship & marital/childrearing considerations to overly-punctilious mundanity ("which one of us should pick up the bullied, nerdy, self-conscious one of our children from school" is a pretty yawnworthy spousal debate to consume a chapter).
Saxon writes with admirable prose/vocabulary, capable dialogue, mind's-eye vivid description, and palpable tension building - but often painful ("Get On With It!!") pacing.

As to presentation: Reader Charlotte Worthing does her best to elevate the book with crisp diction, comfortable timbre & cadence, and nearly pitch-perfect - if occasionally overdramatic - tone.. accompanied with admirable readings of slang/accent-heavy dialogue. If you are given the option between a text version of the book or this recorded iteration, take this one every time.

Altogether, 'My Sister's Secret' merits 6 stars out of 10. It's a bit of a slog at times, but dripping in relatability. I am quite thankful that I had gotten it as a 'Plus' selection - it was a serviceable distraction for a couple of quiet afternoons - but paying a Credit for it over other genre options would be challenging to defend.

Good reading

This book ended very well and it the story picked up the last 10 chapters.
Good writing and narration was great.
It’s a slow book and I fast forward a few chapters and was able to catch up. It however picked up pace 3/4 ways in.
I loved the suspense in the end and was shocked at the conclusion and the Epilogue was amazing.

An easy listen that sucked me in right away.

The characters were great, I was hooked from the beginning. I was surprised by all the murder!
