Publisher's Summary
Lacey Spears made international headlines in January 2015, when she was charged with the "depraved mind" murder of her five-year-old son, Garnett. Prosecutors alleged that the 27-year-old mother had poisoned him with high concentrations of salt through his stomach tube.
To the outside world, Lacey had seemed like the perfect mother, regularly posting dramatic updates on her son's harrowing medical problems. But in reality, Lacey was a textbook case of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. From the time he was an infant, she deliberately made Garnett sick to elicit sympathy from medical professionals, as well as her hundreds of followers on Facebook and other social media. When a Westchester County jury found her guilty of killing Garnett in April 2015, she was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison.
Using Lacey's own never-before-seen Facebook, Twitter, and blog posts, an exclusive prison interview with Lacey herself, as well as interviews with her family and the three police investigators who broke the case, My Sweet Angel gives the definitive account of this extraordinary case that shocked the world.

Engrossing MSbP Case
John Glatt mines Lacey Spears's voluminous Facebook posts (after starting a blog about her son Garnett's "health journey") to explore her often bizarre observations about her child. From inventing a fictional father (killed in an imagined car crash) to crafting a complicated partly-invented medical history (to impress/influence healthcare providers), the Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy psychopathology exhibited by Spears is legitimately fascinating.
Glatt leads readers through the allegations as presented by prosecutors in 2015 - who obtained a 20-year conviction for murder - and it's definitely compelling. Less fortunately, Glatt relies so heavily on the social media evidence that the book often sounds like a straight transcript of the 'Garnett's Journey' page. There is less insight offered by the book than there could have been.
Happily for audiobook afficianados: Shaun Grindell is genuinely excellent reading the book (perhaps the best performance that I have heard from Mr. Grindell). His spot-on diction is matched with timbre/cadence that is comfortable for hours of listening, judicious voice-acting (no inadvisable attempts at accents here), and a tone that demonstrates a near-psychic understanding of the author's intention.
In toto, 'My Sweet Angel' rates 9 stars out of 10. I feel quite fortunate to have gotten this True Crime exposé as a 'Plus' offering, because it would merit a Credit if they asked for one.
[Note: every time I heard the term "Pediatric Gastrentologist", I cringed inwardly. No, that's not a thing. Gastroenterologist, yes. Gastrentoligist, no]
