About this listen

Narcissus and Goldmund is the story of a passionate yet uneasy friendship between two men of opposite character. Narcissus, an ascetic instructor at a cloister school, has devoted himself solely to scholarly and spiritual pursuits. One of his students is the sensual, restless Goldmund, who is immediately drawn to his teacher's fierce intellect and sense of discipline. When Narcissus persuades the young student that he is not meant for a life of self-denial, Goldmund sets off in pursuit of aesthetic and physical pleasures, a path that leads him to a final, unexpected reunion with Narcissus.

I'm going to keep it short because, well you have access to the previews as well as summaries of the book. Hermann Hesse had a great story to tell and it was good to hear it from Simon Vance. There isn't much to be corrected from the narration, the man embodies his characters; from voice to behavior, temper and all those things that set apart two voices. The story, however, felt unnecessarily dragged on, probably to build up the beautiful unexpected ending. I'm no writer, but I felt that's what was happening, the third quarter of the book was a tedious read but thanks to Vance, it passed like water in semi clogged drain. Overall, great experience; an inviting story, and a hooking voice, the perfect combo!

Simon Vance, Hermann Hesse, the formula!
