Publisher's Summary
Drawing on psychoanalysis, literature, and personal experience, Necessary Losses is a philosophy for understanding and accepting life's inevitabilities. In this book Judith Viorst turns her considerable talents to a serious and far-reaching subject: how we grow and change through the losses that are certain and necessary parts of life. She argues persuasively that through the loss of our mothers' protection, the loss of the impossible expectations we bring to relationships, the loss of our younger selves, and the loss of our loved ones through separation and death, we gain deeper perspective, true maturity, and fuller wisdom about life. She has written a book that is both life affirming and life changing.

Interesting perspective!
I was reluctant to listen to this book after reading some of the reviews. My therapist actually suggested I purchase this book to help understand my own personal losses. Originally I was very confused as I always thought of loss as a death of someone close to you. Boy, was I wrong? I didn't realize the impact even my own aging was having on my mental health. This book actually opened my eyes to the fact that I have not accepted some of the changes in my life; the losses. Having had been a teen mom, diagnosed with some very serious chronic illnesses and having a lot of my life ripped from beneath me, I never dealt with the losses. This book helped me realize that even the "small" things in life can take a lot to move past and for the most part we don't recognize them as losses. We don't actually deal with these losses we just shove it back down. At least I do. I appreciate this book and feel it has a lot to offer. The key to this book is to consider your own life while listening to it. Don't get stuck on the "want to be with your mom/dad" like some of the reviewers did. You really need to open your mind and listen to what she is saying. She is not wrong in my opinion.
