Publisher's Summary
We’ve all been told, at one point or another, to “just be yourself”. Whether you are starting school, beginning a new job, attending a party—any time you are trying to find your place in a new or unfamiliar environment—well-meaning advisors offer this nugget of wisdom. But what if being your authentic self means you don’t fit in with what society or your peers may consider “normal”? What is “normal”, anyway?
Join Dr. Kyler Shumway and Dr. Daniel Wendler to explore these questions and many others in Neurodiversity and the Myth of Normal. In six lectures, Dr. Shumway and Dr. Wendler will help you understand the nature of neurodiversity, a growing school of thought that seeks to embrace the range of differences in individual brain function and behaviors rather than “correct” them, with a focus on empathy, acceptance, and accommodation. To help you better understand neurodiversity, your instructors will guide you through three core concepts:
- Neurodiversity is a natural part of human diversity.
- Environment affects our definitions of ability and disability.
- It is possible to create environments that allow everyone to thrive, regardless of differences.
Once you have a better idea of what neurodiversity is and why approaching it with empathy and understanding is so important, Dr. Shumway and Dr. Wendler will dive into the specifics of the most common neurotypes that fall into the category of neurodivergent—autism and ADHD—followed by a look at learning disabilities, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and even psychosis. Along the way, your instructors will share what they’ve seen and learned as psychologists—and one of them will share his own experiences as a neurodivergent individual.
We often fear what we don’t understand. To combat this fear, the concept of neurodiversity can help us recognize the vast spectrum of human experience, embrace that people are people no matter how they are wired, and realize that there’s no such thing as “normal”.

Excellent
Thoroughly enjoyed this insightful exploration into neurodiversity. The narrators were engaging, knowledgeable and thoughtful in their telling, including personal stories as well as the neurochemistry and behavioural aspects. Included, were ways to address multiple neurotypical disorders, suggestions on handling situations and understanding those who experience various disorders as well as a deep dive into what normal truly is. How can we make our environment a better place for everyone? How can we treat everyone in a way that values acceptance and compassion. Each 'lecture' touches on a different neurotypical set ( ie ADHD, ASD, etc) and is a helpful, concise and clear guide for everyone.

Educational and down to earth for professionals and clients.
The authors struck a perfect balance of providing a thorough understanding of neurodiversity in all its facets. As psychologists, they discussed neurodiversity from a neurobiological perspective in a detailed yet simple and accessible way. Equally impressive was their courage to share their humanness and vulnerability when it comes to how neurodiversity has impacted their own mental health and lives. Offering both an educational and compassionate view of neurodiversity they also provided helpful tips and skills that professionals and clients alike will certainly find beneficial in their practice and lives! Highly recommend.

One of the best books on neurodiversity
I got about 5 minutes into this book and I was crying as I was listening to this! Honestly, I have never felt so seen and heard in my life! I struggle with ADHD and 2 Different anxiety disorders (social anxiety disorder and generalized anxiety disorder). Hearing the way that these men talk about the disorders that we have and how they aren’t meant to be changed or removed but as something to be treated with empathy and kindness and understanding is amazing! I’ve a few other books that have to do with the ADHD brain and most that I’ve seen seem to be from the perspective of someone who doesn’t have it, and/or is geared towards people who don’t have it to help them understand. Where as these guy talk about from both sides!
