About this listen
During the last year of her life, my grandmother started writing a story about a young girl named Neva. This book is my way of finishing it. It's a coming-of-age story about family, high school sweethearts, and growing up in the year 1940. Gregory Austin McConnell is a writer, filmmaker, and creator of web video. His previous work includes the award-winning film Voicemails from Strangers. He has produced numerous video essays, documentaries, short stories, diverse educational work, and a general oddball assortment of viral videos that have entertained millions on YouTube.

A sweet story
This is a short, easy listen. I’m not usually big on period pieces or romances but I found myself wanting to keep listening at the end of every chapter until I’d gotten through it all in one sitting when I’d only planned on the first chapter.
The pace at the end does feel a little off, and I’d have preferred if that had been expanded on a little more so everything wasn’t all wrapped up all at once, but I really enjoyed it. And the story behind the story is just so heartwarming. I found myself wondering through it how much the author’s grandmother had put of herself into the story.
