About this listen

When a new teacher arrives in a tiny fishing village, she realizes the most important lessons are the ones she learns outside the classroom.

It’s 1985. Rachel O’Brien arrives in Little Cove seeking a fresh start after her father dies and her relationship ends. As a new teacher at the local Catholic high school, Rachel chafes against the small community, where everyone seems to know her business. The anonymous notes that keep appearing on her car, telling her to go home, don’t make her feel welcome either.

Still, Rachel is quickly drawn into the island’s distinctive music and culture, as well as the lives of her students and fellow teacher Doug Bishop. As Rachel begins to bond with her students, her feelings for Doug also begin to grow. Rachel tries to ignore her emotions because Doug is in a long-distance relationship with his high school sweetheart. Or is he?

Eventually, Rachel’s beliefs clash with church and community, and she makes a decision that throws her career into jeopardy. In trying to help a student, has she gone too far? Only the intervention of the "Holy Dusters", local women who hook rugs and clean the church, can salvage Rachel’s job as well as her chance at a future with Doug.

Narration almost ruined the book

Story was entertaining. I would recommend reading it for something light and fun. However, the narration is pretty awful. It is beyond me why an American is reading a novel that is so Canadian. Her Toronto accent is sad, her French is bad, and her Newfoundland accent is mad. Very poor decision. Buy the book.

Endings and Fresh Starts

This is more the. A story about loss and discovery. It’s a book that provides insight into the culture and people of Newfoundland. It’s about pride and loyalty, honour and acceptance. The author paints a beautiful picture of Newfoundland and its people. The story makes me want to visit Newfoundland!

Nice story with surprising turns

I loved it all. Should be a sequel. Lots more to tell. I wonder if there is one coming?

Feel good Canadian story

Small town adversity that triumphs, a real family feeling of community - we need more of these!

Liked the story but NL may have been overdone

This is the story of a new teacher from Toronto coming to a work in a small school in rural Newfoundland as a French teacher. She carries baggage with her that adds to the drama. I liked the story but in audio format the language wasn't represented well. I understand there are standards but the full effect of the language was choppy when you know what the language was meant to be. I do understand the shock value of a "mainlander" coming in and hearing this for the first time so that was quite funny and well done. Maybe if I had to read it instead of listen on audio I'd have a better appreciation of the story. However that's because I'm from NL. The premise of the story sits around language, kindness, teenage complexities, and falling in love.

Lovely introduction to Newfoundland

The interesting development of a new teacher in a foreign environment was done with humour and heartbreak. The characters were varied and the protagonist was able to develop friendships in unusual places.

nice surprise!

This book started out slow but then grew on me. I've known enough East coasters to tell that the author had first hand knowledge of the culture there. This was a great read and I'm glad i didn't give up on it. is like to read more of her work.

Just plain boring

Sorry but the 'dialect' and bad grammar is honestly just unlistenable. The storyline is boring does not keep the listener eager for more. Disappointing

Terrible narration

I really wanted to like this book but can't get past the second chapter because the narrator's accent is so egregious. i know it is a unique regional accent but she keeps pronouncing the actual name of the province incorrectly - especially ìn the chapter where she is being advised by a local character how to speak it correctly. One would think that a professional narrator would care enough to find out how to say a pĺace name repeated often. Just do a google search "how to pronounce Newfoindland". I'll buy the book to read the story. what a disappointment.

Terrible Narrator (Marnye Young)

I was trying to get past the woman that was narrating so I could enjoy the simple story, but, I couldn’t do it.
