NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • AN OPRAH BOOK CLUB PICK • A dazzling novel about a young Black woman who walks the streets of Oakland and stumbles headlong into the failure of its justice system. This debut of a blazingly original voice “bursts at the seams of every page and swallows you whole” (Tommy Orange, author of There There).

A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: The New Yorker, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, TIME, GOODREADS

Kiara and her brother, Marcus, are scraping by in an East Oakland apartment complex optimistically called the Regal-Hi. Both have dropped out of high school, their family fractured by death and prison

But while Marcus clings to his dream of rap stardom, Kiara hunts for work to pay their rent—which has more than doubled—and to keep the nine-year-old boy next door, abandoned by his mother, safe and fed. One night, what begins as a drunken misunderstanding with a stranger turns into the job Kiara never imagined wanting but now desperately needs: nightcrawling. Her world breaks open even further when her name surfaces in an investigation that exposes her as a key witness in a massive scandal within the Oakland Police Department.

Rich with raw beauty, electrifying intensity, and piercing vulnerability, Nightcrawling marks the stunning arrival of a voice unlike any we have heard before.

Nightcrawling really is a powerful, poignant story worth your attention . . . Revelatory . . . My god—that voice. It’s sometimes too painful to keep reading, but always too urgent to stop.”—Ron Charles, Washington Post

Outstanding!

It is an incredible accomplishment that an author so young has produced a novel of this magnitude. Absolutely outstanding, and possibly the best novel I’ll read this year. Do not hesitate with this one.

A Shocking Eye Opener

This story lays bare exactly what MEN in power do. Story by story, women are reclaiming their power by revealing what goes on in closed, patriarchal groups of ALL races and religions.
How can we look at police, priests, rabbis, teachers, etc with trust ever again now that you've bravely shared your story?
Being female and a women of colour is a double vulnerability I will never know.

Bravo to this young Author!

Loved this story but I could've used a bit more in the ending. I'll be looking up the true story. Can't wait to see what she does next.

A remarkable accomplishment by one so young

I enjoyed the pacing of this novel. There were many twists and turns which were mostly unexpected. The narration was excellent. The ending was not up to the same caliber as the remainder of the novel.

Amazing

What a riveting and tragic story. More so because the author was only 17 when she started writing it. She gave a poetic voice to the trials of so many young women or colour. Bravo.
And the narrator - wow - you are exceptional in your craft. 5 stars all around.

It took me a few chapters to sink my teeth into this one, but once I was in, I was hooked. The story was captivating, heartbreaking, and infuriating. I was drawn into a perspective I can acknowledge that was outside my own experience, yet I grew connected to. I am grateful for the reflection this story forced upon me.
