Publisher's Summary

Cormac McCarthy, best-selling author of National Book Award winner All the Pretty Horses, delivers his first new novel in seven years. Written in muscular prose, No Country for Old Men is a powerful tale of the West that moves at a blistering pace.

Llewelyn Moss is hunting antelope near the Texas-Mexico border when he stumbles upon several dead men, a big stash of heroin, and more than two million dollars in cash. He takes off with the money, and the hunter becomes the haunted. A drug cartel hires a former Special Forces agent to track down the loot, and a ruthless killer joins the chase as well. Also looking for Moss is the aging Sheriff Bell, a World War II veteran who may be Moss' only hope for survival.

Raw and lean, No Country for Old Men is another masterpiece from one of America's acclaimed novelists.

What the critics say

"No Country for Old Men gets off to a riveting start as a sort of new wave, hard-boiled Western....Harrowing, propulsive drama." (The New York Times)
"A mesmerizing modern-day western....While the action of the novel thrills, it's the sensitivity and wisdom of Sheriff Bell that makes the book a profound meditation on the battle between good and evil and the roles choice and chance play in the shaping of a life." (Publishers Weekly)
"Shades of Dostoyevsky, Hemingway, and Faulkner resonate in McCarthy's blend of lyrical narrative, staccato dialogue, and action-packed scenes splattered with bullets and blood. McCarthy fans will revel in the author's renderings of the raw landscapes of Mexico and the Southwest and the precarious souls scattered along the border that separates the two." (Booklist)

Great book, movie now s*cks lol

Decided to re-watch the movie after listening to the book.
the movie is one big L. They left out so many important events that the transitions in the movie made no sense.
They could've made such a better movie without much more budget.
I dont suggest watching the movie after this book. You'll truly be disappointed with it.

usually books are better then the movies, however, this is beyond ridiculous. the movie almost has nothing to do with the book in a way 🤣.

if you haven't seen the movie, no need to watch it. the book is by far way better. not even on the same galaxy.

overall good book. worth the listen.

Amazing Work

I was captured by this book. The story is unsettling but the characters give you courage to go on. It left me wanting to be more honest direct and kind with the people I meet.

great novel

I saw the movie first. I do prefer the movie because of how it portrays Chigurh but the book has a great narrator that closely resembles the voices of the movie. the additional bits of backstory and info help to make it a great novel

Brilliant

One of his best novels. Dark and brilliant. I like to think his dream at the end inspired “the Road”

Amazing book

Best book I’ve ever listened to on audible. Never lost a moment of my attention, so easy to listen to and moved me almost to tears. Just such a great book and amazing performance too.

Good story and a classic

Good story with excellent narration.
It does fall flat a bit towards the end, with a rather anticlimactic finish to our exciting character (Moss).

I don’t want to say much more in fear to spoil if for a potential reader, but I did get quite disappointed.

Masterpiece

After watching the movie roughly ten times or so, I finally gave the book a listen. Even though I knew what was coming, it was amazing. I actually wish I'd read the book before watching the film and experience the story this way for the first time. Sheriff Bell is a lot more fleshed out and the feeling and theme hits home a little more. The book also made me appreciate the movie even more-the Coen's did a really good job of adapting the story and made wise decisions on where to trim the edges.

The Narrator's performance was great as well.

10/10. Give it a go.

Brilliant

Cormac McCarthy is unparalleled as a storyteller. Adding Tom Stechschulte as a narrator brings the story to life in such a way that you can feel the scorching sun on your skin and smell dusty little towns where being a good ‘ol boy is more of a vocation than a description.

Great novel, read well.

Tom Stechschhulte gives a stellar performance of this sharp, richly imagined novel. The dialogue is crisp, and perfectly rendered—from the gravelly-voiced Texas sheriff, to the terrifying nonchalance of the antagonist.

The only hitch I had was the abrupt unravelling of the Moss plot-line, followed by a somewhat meandering conclusion. Still a great novel, and this Audible production truly does it justice.
