About this listen

A profoundly moving exploration of our capacity to heal one another.

Ellie and Eric Nyland have moved their two sons back to Eric’s childhood farmhouse, hoping for a fresh start. But there’s no denying it, their family is falling apart, each one of them isolated by private sorrows, stresses, and missed signals. With every passing day, Ellie’s hopes are buried deeper in the harsh winter snows.

When Eric finds Hannah Finch, the girl across the road, wandering alone in the bitter cold, his rusty police instincts kick in, and he soon discovers there are bad things happening in the girl’s house. With nowhere else to send her, the Nylands reluctantly agree to let Hannah stay with them until she can find a new home after the Christmas holidays. But Hannah proves to be more balm than burden, and the Nylands discover that the only thing harder than taking Hannah in may be letting her go.

What the critics say

“Kimmel’s novel has only a few characters, but they all possess presence and depth and experience honest changes. The strong sense of place serves as an additional relationship for the characters to negotiate.” (Library Journal)

“Quietly powerful.... In less careful hands, this story could have come across as sentimental or melodramatic; instead, it takes shape as a guardedly hopeful tale of resilience.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Moving.... The seemingly mundane scenes - a family dinner, for example - are the most powerful in the story and demonstrate our capacity to heal one another through compassion and kindness.” (Canadian Living)

Great narration for a lovely story.

A lovely story that blends healing and hope. It could have expanded on what happened to the step father. I would have liked to know he was arrested.

Moving and Hopeful Story of Family

I absolutely enjoyed every second of this book. I loved how the story switched back and forth from different family members voices. The narration was also excellent. I could relate to all of the characters in the book. I highly recommend “No Good Asking”.

honest and heartfelt book

I enjoyed the descriptive character building and how that built the story. I loved the power she had to restore this broken family and how the love that existed overcame the obstacles that they came across.

Great story

I loved this story - just beautiful and had me almost at tears at the end. The only reason for 4 stars were performance. They were still great performances, but I sometimes felt like there wasn't a lot of feeling behind the voice - just reading the story. But all in all, a good listen. Thanks!

I loved this story

Perfect description of the characters. The author was able to clearly portray ages and conditions... I could perfectly visualize grandpa, Sammy, etc. This novel is honest and heart-warming. I absolutely loved it. The only thing I wasn’t thrilled about was the switching between male and female narrators. This was unnecessary and jarring. I would have preferred just the female narration.
