Publisher's Summary
Magdalen and Norah Vanstone have known only comfort and affluence for their entire lives. Orphaned suddenly following the unexpected deaths of their parents, the illegitimate sisters find themselves flung into the other extreme of living: their father had neglected to amend his will following their parents' recent marriage, leaving them with nothing, and their bitter, estranged uncle, the legal inheritor of the family fortune, mercilessly refuses them support.
They have no money, no rights and no name. Norah, the elder of the two, looks for work as a governess and accepts her fate. Fiery and headstrong Magdalen, however, does not. She vows revenge and schemes a series of traps to recover the fortune, no matter the cost....

best book ever!
I can't begin to describe how phenomenal this book is. I literally could not put it down. The story is full of suspense and intrigue and juicy conspiracy. The narration is high quality. The ending of the story was incredibly satisfying and unexpected. So much character growth too!! This book belongs on my short list of favourites :)

Exceptional reading of this intriguing classic!
I was simply captivated by this story and narration. The letters were read by each narrator, but Boulton was the main narrator. This classic grabbed hold of my attention and held it all the way to the end. You have your classic bad villains that you cannot wait for them to get their comeuppance and the villains you're not supposed to love, but do anyway. This story boils down to 2 girls who lost everything when they were young... one takes her tragedy in stride and one goes out for revenge-- to make the wrong a right. You can see how far one sinks to exact revenge.. only to find how wrong it was. But can she rise up from her mistakes?
For me, I simply couldn't wait to get back to the book. Some new authors can take lessons from Collin's writing to see how a mystery should be properly written. I read this book alongside with my ebook. I find I remember it more.
I must say that Nicholas Boulton is an absolute genius in narrating this book. He clearly set different voices for each character, so you knew who was speaking by their voice (if you missed it in the words 'x said' for example).
Yes, it's a long book, but I certainly didn't find it a dry book. I will definitely read it again. I absolutely do recommend this book!
