Publisher's Summary

This program is read by Michael J. Fox.

A moving account of resilience, hope, fear and mortality, and how these things resonate in our lives, by actor and advocate Michael J. Fox.

The entire world knows Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly, the teenage sidekick of Doc Brown in Back to the Future; as Alex P. Keaton in Family Ties; as Mike Flaherty in Spin City; and through numerous other movie roles and guest appearances on shows such as The Good Wife and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Diagnosed at age 29, Michael is equally engaged in Parkinson’s advocacy work, raising global awareness of the disease and helping find a cure through The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, the world’s leading non-profit funder of PD science. His two previous best-selling memoirs, Lucky Man and Always Looking Up, dealt with how he came to terms with the illness, all the while exhibiting his iconic optimism. His new memoir reassesses this outlook, as events in the past decade presented additional challenges.

In No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality, Michael shares personal stories and observations about illness and health, aging, the strength of family and friends, and how our perceptions about time affect the way we approach mortality. Thoughtful and moving, but with Fox’s trademark sense of humor, his audiobook provides a vehicle for reflection about our lives, our loves, and our losses.

Running through the narrative is the drama of the medical madness Fox recently experienced, that included his daily negotiations with the Parkinson’s disease he’s had since 1991, and a spinal cord issue that necessitated immediate surgery. His challenge to learn how to walk again, only to suffer a devastating fall, nearly caused him to ditch his trademark optimism and “get out of the lemonade business altogether.”

Does he make it all of the way back? Listen to the audiobook.

Entertaining, Funny, Inspiring

As a person who grew up in the 80’s I have many strong vivid memories of media involving Micheal J Fox. As a Canadian those memories take on a special place of pride. As I listened to the author ( Micheal J Fox) tell his story, I laughed, I took breaths, I got lost in thought. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of this audio book. It did not disappoint. It rekindled old memories of The Keaton family, Marty McFly, and the hilariously funny mayor’s office of Spin City. On top of the great memories the stories opened my eyes to the author’s adventures and great sense of humour. He revealed a piece of himself while maintaining his personal identity. It was beautiful and perfect balance of both of his worlds. Thank you Mike for your sharing and continuing to entertain us.

My only challenge with the audio book was that occasionally the narrator ( author) struggles with annunciation. This is understandable and due to the nature of this being his personal story it almost adds to the experience. However I did miss a few pieces of dialogue due to this. Not enough to take away from this great book but enough to make me aware it was occurring.

All in all it was a great book to listen to while on my regular walks.
Thanks again for sharing your life with your fans Mike

The BEST of all the books I have listened to.

Hearing this story from the mouth of Michael J. Fox was a fantastic experience for me. I am also a recovered alcoholic and Canadian. Although I am quite a few years older than Michael I can identify in so many ways with his story. He tells it with such humility, sincerity and love. Makes me proud to be a Canadian. I highly recommend this book.

A conversation starter for your family.

For many families talking about PD is hard and avoided. I bought the book for my Family member with PD and one by one the rest of the family has consumed the book either in print or audio format. It has sparked many conversations. Also LOFT that was amazing. Thanks Michael and team.

No time like the future

In Micheals compelling story of a disease that is like a thief in the night, destroying what it pleases, and taking away from you, those very things that you hold dear. Sometimes even the things we don’t realized, how much we appreciate them , and we’ve taken them for granted. Reading the book, makes you aware it doesn’t matter what kind of disease which we might get, even if it’s another disease which is uncurable, the outcome is invariably the same. Micheal explains all the same feelings that one goes through. The tribulations and triumphs when battling the unknown. Micheal puts into perspective so well, the ups and downs of the unexpected and the expected. He further goes through the process of grief and loss, for the things that we once had and wake up one day and no longer possess. It’s an amazing journey to share with other humans of all social an economical standards. Thank you for your story to be shared with the others who are too struggling with similar lessons and tribulations of being human. What hit me while listening to you, money is not a factor when it comes to battling something like these things. It is us, the individual against the unknown to figure out what our outcome will be and what we are most grateful for.

Insightful

I really appreciated MJF reading the book himself. You feel his humour, and pain at times, which is visceral as a listener. His writing style is so funny and intelligent, I can’t wait to dive into his other books. A great opportunity for my own self-reflection at this time in my life, I’m so grateful I purchased it.
