About this listen
During her childhood, Carolyn had been exposed to a dead man lying in the street, stumbled over her mother’s body passed out from drinking, was shipped off to several foster homes, and survived molestation. She was forced to eat alone in a basement, given so little food that she had to steal from her classmate’s lunchbox, was coerced into washing and ironing clothes for hours, and pulled weeds in the sweltering summer sun without water to drink. But even during this dark time of uncertainty, Carolyn never gave up hope.
When she was moved to her third foster home, an eighth-grade teacher challenged her to strive to make the honor roll. She was inspired and determined not to let him—or herself—down. By the end of that year, for the first time, Carolyn passed every class. With hard work, determination, and key people coming into her life at pivotal moments, it was the start of a new beginning. A new life.
Not by My Wings Alone is a memoir about never giving up or letting the dark circumstances of your past define your future. An inspiring story of courage, perseverance, resilience, and hope by author and educator Carolyn P. Henry.
