An Indie Next and a Hall of Fame LibraryReads Pick!

A forbidden, secret affair proves that all’s fair in love and science—from New York Times bestselling author Ali Hazelwood.

Rue Siebert might not have it all, but she has enough: a few friends she can always count on, the financial stability she yearned for as a kid, and a successful career as a biotech engineer at Kline, one of the most promising start-ups in the field of food science. Her world is stable, pleasant, and hard-fought. Until a hostile takeover and its offensively attractive front man threatens to bring it all crumbling down.

Eli Killgore and his business partners want Kline, period. Eli has his own reasons for pushing this deal through—and he’s a man who gets what he wants. With one burning exception: Rue. The woman he can’t stop thinking about. The woman who's off-limits to him.

Torn between loyalty and an undeniable attraction, Rue and Eli throw caution out the lab and the boardroom windows. Their affair is secret, no-strings-attached, and has a built-in deadline: the day one of their companies will prevail. But the heart is risky business—one that plays for keeps.

Not my favourite

A personal pet peeve is when an author writes a character with all the characteristics of autism, but gives the character no self awareness about it. You aren’t weird or wrong or too much, you’re just neuro-spicy. I think it’s unfair to make someone feel like they can’t handle certain things without the compassion to understand why.

Very disappointed in the story.

It started off strong and then there was no progress. I usually like her books but this one was not on the list of enjoyable reads. Previously, I had found that Ali Hazelwood only uses intimate scenes when they actually help the story progress in a meaningful way. However, this time she just had chapters and chapters of it. It was not useful to anything. The story was lacking and there were some open ended secondary storylines that could have been closed or explored further.

Too much smut

I’m disappointed with Ali. She did a much better job with her previous novels. And I didn’t like the narrators.

spice over plot

The author mentioned wanting to write a more explicit book but unfortunately that's where all the writing went. The two MCs have no chemistry, the story is boring and the FMC is daft.

Performance was great.

Jason Clarke made this audiobook a 10/10

My new favourite Ali Hazelwood book. I hope she continues to write stories with this kind of tension, and grit. Eli is also my new favourite book boyfriend.

Relatable + good spice

I had the same MO for the longest time, until I fell in love with the best lay of my life too that also made me explore kinks.. I am also on the autism spectrum.. more aware though but I struggle with the same things. My story did not end well, but it was nice to imagine one that did. Made me dream and escape my life in a relatable way. Made me feel less weird and more deserving. loved this book.

Unsufferable

It’s just too much of non stop absolute description of adoration on his part. Not story oriented
I stopped the book
And the male voice got on my nerves
First of Hazelwood’s book i give up on.

Smut and Science

Love the way the dialogue is embedded with the two narrators. Another Ali Hazelwood masterpiece mixing sex and science and politics. I like that she explored more aspects of sexual relationships.
