About this listen

The tech industry is the stock market's hottest, most profitable sector, but it can be a roller-coaster ride. Companies with great ideas can end up going nowhere, and some that dominate today will be sold at fire-sale prices in five years. "Sure things" can become "sore things" very rapidly. Nothing but Net provides the knowledge and insights you need to understand what's really hot, to know what's not, and to outperform other investors consistently and decisively.

Famous for his smart, savvy, and unique approach to tech stock investing, Mark Mahaney provides his 10 proven rules for succeeding as a long-term tech stock investor - explaining everything he's learned during almost 25 years of analyzing internet stocks, including:

  • Why revenue growth and customer metrics-not earnings-are what matter most to tech investors
  • How to invest - not trade - in the great growth opportunities that lie ahead
  • How to determine when high valuations are a warning sign and when they signal an opportunity

Nothing but Net provides powerful advice for the next two decades - lessons you can start applying today and use for years to come.

Overall Great Observations, but Some Flaws

I think Mark Mahaney is bang on with his views on the key drivers behind successful growth stocks and does a great job of presenting these views and providing supporting evidence and examples. He does a fantastic job of distilling his 20 years of learnings down to some straightforward key principles. It does feel a bit off to me that he chose to write this book when he did given how distorted the 'covid market' was for roughly 14 months; this market has since been in the process of correcting and continues to correct as I write this, and many of the names that Mark touted as support for his investing philosophy are well off their highs. But two things offset this: a) he addresses this directly in the last chapter, knowing full well that he wrote the book at what was likely a mid-term market peak and b) this doesn't change the fact that he's got great investing experience that leads to some very sound insights and principles for anyone interested in growth investing. I really enjoyed the book and expect that I will relisten to it multiple times.
