A 2020 Audie winner - best female narrator

A Read with Jenna Today Show Book Club Pick!

Audiobook performed by Marin Ireland.

"I can’t believe how good this book is.... It’s wholly original. It’s also perfect.... Wilson writes with such a light touch.... The brilliance of the novel [is] that it distracts you with these weirdo characters and mesmerizing and funny sentences and then hits you in a way you didn’t see coming. You’re laughing so hard you don’t even realize that you’ve suddenly caught fire." (Taffy Brodesser-Akner, New York Times Book Review)

Kevin Wilson’s best book yet - a moving and uproarious novel about a woman who finds meaning in her life when she begins caring for two children with remarkable and disturbing abilities.

Lillian and Madison were unlikely roommates and yet inseparable friends at their elite boarding school. But then, Lillian had to leave the school unexpectedly in the wake of a scandal, and they’ve barely spoken since. Until now, when Lillian gets a letter from Madison pleading for her help.

Madison’s twin stepkids are moving in with her family, and she wants Lillian to be their caretaker. However, there’s a catch: The twins spontaneously combust when they get agitated, flames igniting from their skin in a startling but beautiful way. Lillian is convinced Madison is pulling her leg, but it’s the truth.

Thinking of her dead-end life at home, the life that has consistently disappointed her, Lillian figures she has nothing to lose. Over the course of one humid, demanding summer, Lillian and the twins learn to trust each other - and stay cool - while also staying out of the way of Madison’s buttoned-up politician husband. Surprised by her own ingenuity yet unused to the intense feelings of protectiveness she feels for them, Lillian ultimately begins to accept that she needs these strange children as much as they need her - urgently and fiercely. Couldn’t this be the start of the amazing life she’d always hoped for?

With white-hot wit and a big, tender heart, Kevin Wilson has written his best book yet - a most unusual story of parental love.

Featured Article: The Best Female Narrators You Can Listen To All Day

When considering a new audiobook, one of the biggest questions listeners have is whether they’ll enjoy the narration style. This is understandable as audiobooks span at least a few hours, and sticking with one person’s voice for that period can feel like a big commitment. Luckily, there are so many excellent voice actors performing audiobooks that you might just find yourself gravitating to certain audiobooks based solely on the narrator’s strength.

I don't usually review

I don't generally review books here, but this clever, quirky and endearing book was such a glorious surprise that I am compelled. Deftly told, the characters are complex and fleshed out and the "paranormal " nature of the children smoothly worked into the story. If you want to look below the surface of the narrative it is clearly about much more then some lost people finding places, but the story is really satisfying in itself. The performance fits the characters perfectly, especially representing Lillian in her general deadpan and defeated approach to life. I really loved this audiobook!

Couldn’t stop listening

You would think that a story about kids that spontaneous combust would be ridiculous and totally bizarre, however this story is just wonderful. The storyline is rich and creative with deep character development of the lead role. The narration is masterful and so easy to listen too. Overall, one of my favourite books yet.

LOVED this Southern Gothic, Magical Realism novel

So pleased I bought this novel of how unloved, dysfunctional people (Lillian, Bessie and Roland) find their own family.

It is quirky with snarky and situational humour and a HFN hopeful ending with acceptance, trust and love. Disbelief needs to be suspended, and some characters are writ too large (such as Jasper). All the way through I did wonder why on earth Lillian cared so much for Madison, though she did redeem herself (a tad) in the last chapter.

The narrator was truly excellent.

So fun! I'll return to this in future :-)

This audiobook holds together in every way -- it's as if Wilson writes for voice narration, not for paper. And for this narrator in particular, who gets every wacky and otherwise character in this story, I'm looking forward to my next venture led by author Kevin Wilson. Six stars!
