Publisher's Summary

The classic tale in 3D, like you’ve never heard it before.

An Audible Original adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, executive produced by Academy-Award winning director Sam Mendes, with an original score by The Feeling’s Dan Gillespie Sells (Everyone’s Taking About Jamie), and with an all-star cast including Brian Cox (Succession) as Fagin, Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah) as Bill Sikes, Nicola Coughlan (Bridgerton) as Nancy, Adeel Akhtar (Four Lions) as Mr Bumble, Lucian Msamati (Gangs of London) as Mr Brownlow, Paapa Essiedu (The Lazarus Project) as Toby Crackit, Kit Connor (Heartstopper) as Noah Claypole, Diane Morgan (Philomena Cunk) as Mrs Mann, Julia Davis (Nighty Night) as Mrs Sowerberry, Nick Mohammed (Ted Lasso) as Mr Sowerberry and Patricia Allison (Sex Education) as Rose Maylie. And introducing Emilio Villa Muhammad as Oliver Twist and Elijah Wolf as the Artful Dodger.

Orphaned at birth, Oliver Twist is born into the grimmest of 19th century English workhouses with a life of grinding poverty ahead of him. But the boy is a fighter and after being evicted from the workhouse for asking for 'more' and surviving a stint as an undertaker’s assistant, he walks many miles to London and finds a whole new life with a gang of young pickpockets led by the Artful Dodger and their guardian Fagin.

Oliver’s adventures are only beginning as he finds his way into the home of wealthy Mr. Brownlow. Even there he is not safe, for Fagin and his even more dangerous colleague, the thief Bill Sikes, seek to snatch him back and lead him deeper into a life of crime. Only Nancy, Bill Sikes’ girlfriend, can ensure Oliver’s future safety, even if that puts her own life at risk. Full of twists and turns, the story moves towards a dramatic climax when murder prompts a manhunt and a final confrontation with the forces threatening Oliver’s future.

Sit back and listen as this 19th century classic is brought to the most vivid, cinematic life in an epic, immersive audio drama.

Oliver Twist

Gentle and kind, but with a strong survival instinct and a fierce ability to fight his corner. Orphaned at birth and evicted from the workhouse, Oliver bravely heads to London alone, seeking his fortune.

Fagin

A complex man shaped by a long life of poverty and desperation, Fagin leads a gang of young thieves. He teaches Oliver the art of pickpocketing and provides tenderness he has never known, but Fagin can turn in an instant.

Bill Sikes

A man who communicates through violence and inspires fear in everyone he meets, Sikes is a brutal robber shadowed by a vicious dog called Bullseye.

Nancy

Nancy’s hard life has made her tough and street-smart, she won’t let anyone mess her around and isn’t afraid of speaking her mind. She has an instinctive sympathy for Oliver, and a dangerous love for Bill Sikes.

Jack Hawkins

Fagin’s muse, the Artful Dodger, is a tough kid, making his way through a tough life. He’s a skilled thief and a real charmer who takes Oliver under his wing.

Rose Maylie

A young woman of moral force and passion, who shares more in common with Oliver than might first meet the eye.

Mr Bumble

Cruel and pompous, Mr Bumble runs the workhouse where Oliver spends his first years.

Mrs Mann

A sidekick to Mr Bumble at the workhouse, and equally cruel, Mrs Mann is not best pleased when Oliver asks for more of her gruel.

Mr Brownlow

A kind and wealthy, middle-aged bachelor whose past experiences have made him retreat for much of his life, he becomes Oliver’s friend and mentor.

Mr & Mrs Sowerberry

An undertaker and his wife, the Sowerberrys take Oliver in when he first leaves the workhouse. His wicked sense of humour and her dissatisfaction with her own life result in a tough time for Oliver.

Noah Claypole

Servant to Mr and Mrs Sowerberry, Noah takes himself very seriously. He teases Oliver about his late mother, but unexpectedly faces Oliver’s wrath.

Toby Crackit

A close colleague of Bill Sikes, but very different from Sikes in his manner, Toby Crackit treats thievery as a game, a sport, rather than a matter of life and death.

Excellent performance

I love the way this book is performed like a movie instead of narrative like the rest. I’d tell my friends to get Oliver Twist for sure

Great Performance

The cast really breathed life into this Dickens classic. Special acknowledgement to the voice actor who portrayed Fagan. That said,, none were really less then he, in their individual efforts.
Good Stuff.

Extraordinary adaptation!

This is an extraordinary audio adaptation of one of my favourite classics.
The production and direction are outstanding!
The sound is of the high quality, with 3D sound (what we used to call surround sound?) that made me jump out of my chair or look over my shoulder.
It’s a “movie on tape” with terrific characterization.
Now, this is not an audiobook that you can say that you have read the book (of course, you can fool yourself). This adaptation will give you a knowledge of the storyline.
I do recommend reading the book in full or try the unabridged audiobook (there are plenty of different editions available).

Great book but performance needs a narrator.

The performance was good, but felt like a movie without screen display. During the fight parts was a pain to understand what was going on, also some dialogues have background sounds which make it even more burdensome
Definitely needs narrator to explain what is going on.
P.S: Love Diane Morgan but her accent was impossible

Lose Yourself in an old Tale

This audio book of Oliver Twist was so well done I was transported to the old streets of London. You could feel and almost taste and smell the poor city streets and the plight of the poor. It was a wonderful rendition of an old classic.
