About this listen

In this fast-paced historical thriller, the number one New York Times best-selling author introduces Archer, a WWII veteran forced to investigate a small-town murder - or risk returning to prison.

It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women.

The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail. Within a single night, his search for gainful employment - and a stiff drink - leads him to a local bar, where he is hired for what seems like a simple job: to collect a debt owed to a powerful local businessman, Hank Pittleman.

Soon Archer discovers that recovering the debt won't be so easy. The indebted man has a furious grudge against Hank and refuses to pay; Hank's clever mistress has her own designs on Archer; and both Hank and Archer's stern parole officer, Miss Crabtree, are keeping a sharp eye on him.

When a murder takes place right under Archer's nose, police suspicions rise against the ex-convict, and Archer realizes that the crime could send him right back to prison...if he doesn't use every skill in his arsenal to track down the real killer.

Intriguing without being unsettling

The story was very intriguing in that the plot made you think about where the plot was going, without being intrusive, horrific, etc.

Interesting twists

I believe this is a new character for David Baldacci and one that I really like already. There were some very unexpected twists and turns in the plot lines. I found the characters well developed, interesting and unusual. Overall a real page turner; I frequently listen to books in my car and I found myself driving around the block a few times to finish an extra chapter or two.

It’s a good book but...

I did enjoy this book quite a lot. The only negative is that I have read most of Baldacci’s other books and didn’t love this as much as his other series or stand alone books. Maybe it was the time period....not sure. Great book, just not as good as his others.

A Terrific Story, with an Intriguing New Character

This is one of the best books I’ve purchased through Audible, and certainly one of David Baldacci’s finest. A terrific story, a complex mystery. Eduardo Ballerini is a truly fine narrator/story-teller. Well done all around.

Like a slow movie from the 1920’s

The narrator tells the story and paints the picture of a time right after the war - the notation is all right but you just need to know that it’s honestly like listening to a Carey Grant movie.

great new character

My husband and I listened to this novel on a long car trip. It made the miles fly by. Archer is a great character and the complex story unfolds well. My only minor complaint is that the narrator chose to voice some characters with the stilted voices from movies of the 50s. I found it somewhat irritating. He did however have distinct voices for each character which made the story easy to follow.
