About this listen

Winner of 2020's Best Book of the Year Award, Indies Today, Finalist in 15th Annual National Indie Excellence Award (Addiction and Recovery), and a Recipient of an Indie B.R.A.G. Medallion

One Hit Away is a gripping, startling account into addiction, compassion, and ultimate salvation. It is powerful because of its honesty. Raw without being sensationalistic, this harrowing account of Jordan’s journey provides insight and compassion into the struggle of addiction. It is an important, engrossing book that is hard to put down." (Annie Grace, author of This Naked Mind: Control Alcohol, Find Freedom, Discover Happiness & Change Your Life)

At the age of 24, Jordan Barnes woke up next to a lifeless body, rifled through his dead friends’ pockets for any remaining heroin, and went right back to using. Strung out and homeless during the supposed best years of his life, there was no clear way out of the opioid crisis ravaging the streets of Portland, Oregon. But though Jordan had long accepted his fate, his parents still held out hope and would do everything in their power to get him the help he so desperately needed.

After a harrowing journey that proves the life of an addict will always get worse, never better, Jordan found himself at the gates of Sand Island, Hawaii’s most notorious two-year inpatient treatment facility. He soon discovers that though his heart was in the right place, the hardest battle of his life was yet to come.

One Hit Away is his arduous and unlikely true story of recovery, rehabilitation, and redemption.

"One Hit Away takes you on a journey you won't forget. An honest expression of such a common and hardcore reality is so necessary. This memoir is a work of art, truth, and healing on a level many of us have yet to encounter." (Kayleon Dortch-Elliott, author of One Day at a Time: Remaining in Step)

Wow

As a former heroin/fentanyl addict who was on the streets of Vancouver, I literally broke down in tears so many times listening to this. This story resonated with me on so many levels and I feel like it is a universal story all heroin addicts have lived through.

If you are in early recovery please be careful as some parts can be triggering, especially the parts describing IV use.

Hope

A story well written about a man's journey to recovery.
This memoir allows you to hear both sides of addiction, one being in active addiction & the other being about his recovery. It gives hope to many to know that we do recover!!
The narrator did very well & I found his voice easy to listen to. He gave each character their own voice in a way.
Highly recommended listening to this book as you wont be disappointed.

Loved it!

As a mom in recovery dealing with my adult child’s addiction, it was tough to listen to but also so inspiring. The power of a parent’s love is endless, and it shows in Jordan’s story. I’ll definitely be sharing and recommending this book.

Unapologetically raw and authentic

Jordan spares no gritty, emotional detail of his journey through recovery. His transparency inspires authentic relatability to the deepest core of many different layers of addiction and what it takes to conquer it. Thank you for sharing your story, it will help teach and heal many for years to come!

An Amazing Journey

This book captures the essence of recovery.
I found this subject can be very dry and boring but he draws you into the journey by sharing all his feelings it is very rare to see someone come back from such a severe addiction but he does it by following everything he is told to do no matter how trivial.

I truly enjoyed this book and think even if you are not an addict it's a great read and if you
are it's must

Riveting story of drug addiction and Redemption

This is a brutally honest and riveting story of the downward spiral of addiction. I am a reader who has never used or smoked, so it was fascinating to hear the life of a drug addict, being saved from death and having parents who never lost hope in their son. I never really understood what it meant to chase the high until I heard Jordan’s story. All the people I know who are clean came to know a higher power. I highly recommend this audio. I could not stop listening. I am so proud of you Jordan, your parents and all those who helped you on your journey of sobriety. Keep up the good fight.

The Journey through sobriety

I guess what I find a little resentful about is the complaining of the start of your sobriety. Hawaii....hell yeah if anyone had a choice to go through the hell of Getty sober on a beautiful island or in a cold damp city, I am sure the would take the chance to go to Hawaii. I have never been an addict or alcoholic, I guess being financially stable on an island is already half the battle to recovery. Your parents support and dedication to visit you and help you is a kindness most addicts don't have. I'm glad your sober and have your life back. I guess with your parents giving you everything before, during and after your journey is a blessing not all people have.
