About this listen
Ruth Ware, the powerhouse New York Times bestselling author with over six million books sold to date, returns with her ninth novel, which promises to be the summer’s most gripping beach book.
Lyla is in a bit of a rut. Her post-doctorate research has fizzled out, she’s pretty sure her contract will not be extended, and things with her boyfriend, Nico, an aspiring actor, aren’t going great. When the opportunity arises for Nico to join the cast of a new reality TV show, The Perfect Couple, she decides to try out with him. This is the big break she needs! A whirlwind preproduction process later, Lyla finds herself whisked off to a tropical paradise with Nico, boating through the Indian Ocean towards Ever After Island, where the two of them will compete against four other couples—Bayer and Angel, Dan and Santana, Joe and Romi, and Connor and Zana—in order to win a cash prize.
Alas, not long after they arrive on the deserted island, things start going wrong. After the first challenge leaves everyone rattled and angry, an overnight storm takes matters from bad to worse. Cut off from the mainland by miles of ocean, deprived of their phones, and unable to reach the boat and crew that brought them there, the group must band together for survival. Tensions run high and fresh water runs low. Then, one by one, contestants start to die. Lyla suddenly realizes she and Nico are trapped on the island with a murderer on the loose…and nowhere to hide.
A fast-paced, spellbinding thriller rife with intrigue and characters that feel true to life, this novel proves yet again that Ruth Ware is the queen of psychological suspense.

Story
The worst thing to ever happen on Hemlock Circle occurred in Ethan Marsh’s backyard. One July night, ten-year-old Ethan and his best friend and neighbor, Billy, fell asleep in a tent set up on a manicured lawn in a quiet, quaint New Jersey cul-de-sac. In the morning, Ethan woke up alone. During the night, someone had sliced the tent open with a knife and taken Billy. He was never seen again. Thirty years later, Ethan has reluctantly returned to his childhood home. Plagued by bad dreams and insomnia, he begins to notice strange things happening in the middle of the night.

After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

Silly Drivel
Sorry to offend anyone who liked this book but what a bore. The story is ridiculous, the narrator is awful, trying men’s voices, women’s voices and everything in between. I listened to the whole book which was quite painful. Not my “cup of tea” as the British would say.

Great narration but story was pretty boring over all. No really big twist and lots of plot holes. Not the quality story telling I have come to expect from Ruth Ware.

Pretty good
I liked this book. The narrator is great. It could use some editing tho. Like maybe cut out a quarter of it. There is way too much thinking and not enough words or actions. It feels like it’s circling the story instead of just going right to it. I get building suspense but less internal dialogue would have made the story better. Maybe people like that though. I listened to it on 1.5 speed and that helped. It was a good story and a good idea and some characters were developed.

Definitely worth the credit
I really enjoyed the story. The pace was great. The story kept my interest. I found myself making excuses to listen more frequently. The only downside was the narrator wasn't stellar. Ok, but poor voices for the male characters, made the main character sound like she had the confidence of a mouse and mispronounced words like insulin. A little annoying, but not even close to affect the story itself. Definitely a story to buy.

Great Quick Read
Loved the pace of this book. I always love Ruth Ware and the familiarity of her books. I did get frustrated with the main character and wish some of the other characters were the main, but other than that I really enjoyed.
