About this listen

After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows there’s no more time for lessons. No more time for uncertainty.

Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it’s impossible to know who to trust.

Now Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves—her dragons, her family, her home, and him.

Even if it means keeping a secret so big, it could destroy everything.

They need an army. They need power. They need magic. And they need the one thing only Violet can find—the truth.

But a storm is coming...and not everyone can survive its wrath.

The Empyrean series is best enjoyed in order.

Big story, Same narrator

Great story as per usual. Lots of action and adventure.
Still not accustomed to that narrators voice. Not my favourite

I’m seriously hooked

This entire series has been engrossing and the characters are well defined. It’s been a very long time since I was last so invested in a series. The wait for the next book is going to be torturous, but worth the wait, I am sure.
This is definitely a romance series set in a fantasy setting, and the romance depicted keeps you invested. Rebecca’s ability to depict a man that millions can fall madly in love with is astonishing.
For her first foray into fantasy, I am impressed.
The magic system is easy enough to understand, the politics are dynamic and interesting, even the dragons have distinct and memorable personalities, and the world building is masterfully meted out to make it easier to follow.

Good, but could be have been better. Worst narration ever

Story - Rebeca is building the story well. Leaves us on the hook by the end of the book, but tbh I was less hooked throughout this book compared to forthwing and iron flame. For the first half of the book, I felt lost even though I recapped forthwing and iron flame before listening to Onyx Storm. The story felt a bit decoupled from the first two books. And somehow Rebecca managed to make Xaden less appealing. My mind is blown as to how you can do that. Loved Ridoc and Aaric in the book. Now I am left with more questions than answers.

Narration - the narration was the worst part about this book. Specially after listening to Quicksilver, this felt like a crappy third rated audio experience. The narrator painted the story with a completely different vibe with her grumpy narration. I was so annoyed, at some point I was forcing myself to listen which was taking away from the pleasure of the story. Regret buying the audiobook.

REBECCA YARROS DOES IT AGAIN - SPOILER ALERT

SPOILER ALERT
“I will save him.”
― Rebecca Yarros, Onyx Storm

Rebecca Yarros did it again ! I am obsessed. Not often an author can have me wanting to reread a book immediately after finishing it..

[ I have so many theories and questions rattling in my brain.

Finally we meet Xadens mother.
The broken compass gifted to Violet.. Is it truly broken? What does it point too if not north?
~ D R E A M W A L K E R ~ Yay !
Does Violet have a third signet? It felt like the when it was said how dare you gift her that, was about more then Violets dream walking.. Why could Violet channel magic and still communicate with her dragons in the isles with no magic
Andarana finding her family only for them to turn there backs on her was heartbreaking.
All the talk about being dedicated and all the paths Violet could have travelled, Did Violet start to turn venin as a kid? and was it stopped by being dedicated to dunne?
Aaric can see the future!? Holy shit.

Now about the ending...
Who was Xadens new "brother" .. Obviously it is someone close considering he said whoever it was watched him suffer for the past 5 months. Could it be Bodhi? He was unaccounted for in the end, not to mention Xaden married Violet and gave her everything.. Is that because bodhi couldn't take over since he turned venin?? What happened in the 12 hours Violet forgets.. and why would Violet tell Imogen to erase those memories (assuming it was Violets choice)

Good

I would’ve preferred less battle scenes but generally speaking, I enjoyed this book. A little hard to follow because there’s lots of names thrown around that didn’t make big impacts in the first few books.

Fully invested

What a great story! It is action packed and a lot happens again in this 3rd installment. I loved spending more time with so many fav characters from the first two books. Each character has their own personality that continues to grow in the background and shine through on the page. This and the well planned story that delivers at the same time it introduces more & more - shows a real talent in Rebecca Yarros. Loved it!
I thought Rebecca Soler did a great job again. She pulls me into the story and I love her delivery.
I also read the book, which I found helpful because there is so much action and so many clues; I didn't want to miss a thing!
Only complaint is the narrator who read Rhiannon's chapter sounded like she was reading a fairytale to children on the story time mat. Not a good fit for this book at all.
Thanks for the ride Rebecca x2! Can't wait for the next one!

Love the Characters

I loved that we got to hear more of other people’s thoughts and stories through this book…but damn the cliffhangers are rough! Can’t wait for the next one!

A little disappointing

The third book was a disappointment. I found so many parts repetitious. I started to get tired of the love scenes.
