About this listen

Danish countess Karen Blixon, known as Isak Dineson, ran a coffee plantation in Kenya in the years when Africa remained a romantic and formidable continent to most Europeans. Out of Africa is her account of her life there, with stories of her respectful relationships with the Masai, Kikuyu, and Somali natives who work on her land; the European friends who visit her; and the imposing permanence of the wild, high land itself. Stage and television actress Julie Harris delivers a reading that is emotionally charged and reflective, recreating Dinesen's lively appreciation for the land she loved so much.Public Domain (P)1985 The Audio Partners Publishing Corp. sweeping, sad, beautiful

Not quite the same story as the film, but a beautifully told told story of the woman's experiences running a coffee farm in Africa during the early part of the 20th C. Chapters are long, but it's an easy short book to get through.

Perfect!

So good! I have always loved the movie and the book exceeded it as it was so poignant and moving. I have been to Africa and the description of the landscape as well as the understanding of the local people was wonderful. The narrator read well and with realistic emotion and expression.

A Favourite Movie..

This is a rare case of the movie being just as good as the abridged version of this book might check out the unabridged someday I did. This was very good.

Everlasting beauty

This book has such a beautiful feel to it. The characters, the description of exotic landscapes and touch upon the impact of colonialism in Africa.
And yes, the love story. Love for life and love that arrives surprisingly when to brave souls meet. Beautiful reading as well.
