About this listen
An unforgettable story of an ordinary woman in astonishing circumstances who defies the odds.
Timea Nagy was 20 years old when she answered a newspaper ad in Budapest, Hungary, calling for young women to work as babysitters and housekeepers in Canada. Hired by what seemed like a legitimate recruitment agency, Timea left her home believing she would earn good money to send back to her family. What she didn't know was that she'd been lured by a ring of international human traffickers - and her life would never again be the same.
Upon her arrival in Toronto, she was forced into sex labour in some of the city's seediest nightclubs, starved and controlled by her agents, and brainwashed to believe she was to blame for her situation. The only way she'd be free was when her debt was paid - but, no matter how hard she worked, that debt seemed only to go up, not down.
Out of the Shadows is a gripping, heartbreaking, and eye-opening journey deep into the underworld of human trafficking and the sex trade, told in riveting detail by one brave survivor. At once tragic and powerfully redemptive, Timea Nagy's story will stay with you long after you've heard the last moments.

Story
Verteran investigative journalist Stevie Cameron first began following the story of missing women in 1998, when the odd newspaper piece appeared chronicling the disappearances of drug-addicted sex trade workers from Vancouver's notorious Downtown Eastside. It was not until February 2002 that pig farmer Robert William Pickton would be arrested, and 2008 before he was found guilty, on six counts of second-degree murder. These counts were appealed and in 2010, the Supreme Court of Canada rendered its conclusion.

Story
I was born and broken in Birkenhead, abused from infancy by a network of every kind of pervert from ‘thinks it’s love’ to ‘show it hurts’. I was unwanted, beaten, sold, swapped, photographed, filmed, left for dead, corrupted, blamed, betrayed, ignored and orphaned. But I was also born with a fire inside me. I call it my Phoenix Fire. I am no victim—that word only describes what happened to me. Nor am I a survivor because that implies I am over it. I am a Phoenix—a work in progress. This is my story....

When a fancy car pulls up outside six-year-old Marie's home in 1959, her dad tells her she is going on holiday. But little does she know she will not see her home again for four long years. Her family cannot afford to keep her at home. Marie tells the story of how she was taken away from a poor but happy and loving home life to live in a convent - away from everyone and everything she holds dear. What the critics say
National best seller
"Out of the Shadows...takes a brutally honest look at Nagy's experience in the expansive yet largely hidden world of human trafficking while offering readers hope and information on how they can help in the fight against trafficking.... Out of the Shadows is a book filled with uncomfortable yet unforgettable anecdotes, keen insights and painful memories for Nagy...a compelling first-hand account of the murky world of human trafficking." (The Sarnia Observer)
"Timea Nagy's harrowing story deeply reports the ugliness of human trafficking. But it's ultimately a remarkable tale of survival and resilience, with lessons for a country that considers itself to be a safe place for immigrants." (Pauline Dakin, best-selling author of Run, Hide, Repeat)
"Out of the Shadows is a story of survival in the face of unimaginable circumstances. In a voice that is heartbreakingly innocent and honest, Timea Nagy inspires us to recognize the strength of purpose and resilience, and redemption." (Jackie Kai Ellis, best-selling author of The Measure of My Powers)

There are no words.
I always view 5-star reviews with a bit of skepticism as I know how easy it is to fake them. Having finished this book, I can honestly say that the reviews on it are telling the truth. Timea's story is wild from start to finish, nearly unbelievable at parts with how much disregard she received from institutions and safeguards that were supposed to help her. It's particularly difficult to hear when you've lived in some of the places she mentions; having the wool over your eyes pulled back just to see how much this situation is at your front door is very sobering.
I feel for her in so many ways, and I'm gratified to know she's found purpose in the work she now does to bring awareness to human trafficking, as well as having found love, friendship, and true safety in her new home.
Beautifully written, beautifully narrated, and 10000% worth a read.

Opening my eyes and my heart ❤️
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I bought and began to listen to “Out of the Shadows” but It didn’t take me long to feel my heart open and sometimes break for this young woman, Timea Nagy. I heard myself saying the words, “Don’t fall into the trap, Timea. Don’t let your fear draw you down that dark rabbit hole.” But everyone must have her/his own life experiences that will mold them into who they will become. For people like Timea the red hot hammer of the forge will create the strength and resolve to rise like the proverbial phoenix from the ashes to become a positive force for freedom and compassion for women (and sometimes men) everywhere. The buying and selling of human beings everywhere must stop. Timea is part of my global family and no words can describe how proud I am of her. She personifies one of my favourite sayings: “The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.”
And thanks to Audible for making individuals’ stories available for all beings to hear. The fire inside of me has been rekindled.

Inspiring! A story of the human spirit
This is not only a story about the ugly world of human trafficking, but it is also a story that shines a light on how trauma can lead to more trauma. It reminds us that people don’t always get to choose their circumstances but instead that they are often the result of many traumas. It is the inspiring true story of how one woman has risen out of the trauma through helping others not only on an individual level but also on a community, national and international level.

A Must Read!
As a society we know so little about human trafficking and the seedy underworld that controls this. We need to be aware of young men and women that look like they may need help and get out of our comfort zones and try to help. Bravo Tamika you are a true hero!
