About this listen

Born to mentally unstable parents, Rachel Moran left home at the age of 14. Being homeless, she became a prostitute to survive. In Paid For, she describes, with intelligence and empathy, the fears that she and others had working on the streets and in brothels. She also speaks to the psychological damage that accompanies prostitution and the estrangement from one's body. At the age of 22, Moran escaped prostitution. She has since become a writer and an activist.

What the critics say

"Moran's thoughtful, highly readable, and provocative treatise shines a necessary light on a dark and underdiscussed topic." ( Kirkus)

Incredible

Though this book is not for the faint of heart, it is incredible. I generally don't read memoirs, but the memoir of a talented writer with a commitment to honesty is worth reading. The author is unflinching in telling personal stories that clearly come from places of deep trauma. Given the personal nature, she's incredibly balanced and her compassion for her fellow humans shines. This book changed how I thought about prostitution and I would highly recommend it to anyone in a healthy state for consuming this type of content. A life changing read.

Couldn't get through it

This industry story will never begin nice, but the narration and the tone is downright poor. we need more stories that can ignite and steer through the darkness, instead of sick you into it and off title but despair and depression. This book is just that.

wanted a story and got a documentary

This is more of a documentary than a story. the story is told indirectly. Not what I was looking for.
