About this listen
A new novel by Elena Ulanovsky, Palms from the Asphalt can be called an encyclopedia of the great Aliyah of 1989-2003. Like a wave that, having crashed against the shore rocks, seashells, and crabs who fail to cling and are washed out to sea, so the wave of immigration to Israel swept up everyone: those who were willing and those who were not, those with Jewishness in their soul, those Jewish by passport only, and even non-Jews - those who left out of necessity, following their husbands and wives, and those who were ready to leave for any price, even forging documents to become Jewish.
All these characters are in the novel, linked by familial ties or the bonds of love. Some lived in the same city before leaving, while others meet in the never-ending line to obtain Israeli visas in Moscow. They all find themselves in Israel practically simultaneously, on the cusp of the first Gulf War. How many years does it take each of them to make the Holy Land their own? For some it only takes one night of bombs falling overhead, for others, their entire life....
