About this listen

He was a Hero. Now he's not. He'll stop at nothing to rise to the top again.

Max was murdered, but now he is mostly over it. Living on earth as a recent college graduate, he can still perfectly recall his past life on the fantasy world of Albion before that. He'd been hailed as the "Hero of the World" after crawling his way up from poverty, eventually enjoying great fame and luxury.

But on mana-starved Earth, he's just a guy.

However, when Earth is suddenly attacked, changing the natural laws of the world and threatening all life on the planet, Max will get a new opportunity to regain some of his lost power...and then some. He discovers an entire system of multi-dimensional colleges created for those gifted with a Path.

The universe is much larger than Max had even known ever during his first life. Max is not the Hero of Albion anymore, but the drive to excel is still part of his nature. And the more power he has, the easier it should be to save his world.

...Right?

Fantastic narration and story. Solid MC. Fun listen.

Man, this narrator is really good. Genuinely enjoyed his work. I am not familiar with him. I am not certain if he has a large body of work or not, but I’m sure glad I learned of him. If he isn’t big, I have no doubt he will get there. If he already is…well, makes sense :)

I have to say I really enjoyed this story. I’m sad that book 2 isn’t out yet, but it will be soon. I will be following this series closely. Quite an intriguing arc, a bit of a slow burn, but in a good way. The story is genuinely interesting, especially the bits between bigger set pieces. There is lots to learn, and an interesting magic system, or rather “path system”. I think many magic systems exist in the universe, so that’s neat. And while it may be a slow burn as I said, there is a velocity to the story that always pushes the reader into new interesting things, so a slow burn isn’t a bad thing in this case. The MC is compelling enough and the writing fascinating enough that even the mundane takes on some appeal here. It’s well done.

The MC is pretty cool, fairly grounded, and down to earth. Lots of interesting information is gleaned from conversations, and you get a sense the MC has a boatload yet to learn. The MC seems set to embark upon a huge series of situations and events. It’s been well hinted at that this spans the multiverse, which makes this quite fascinating.

If this doesn’t turn into at least 8 or 10 good books, then slap me sideways. The writing is quite good, but I also think the MC’s intentions can be shared more with the reader with no detriment to storytelling. Sometimes ignorance isn’t bliss, and the reader is kept in the dark about the MC’s intentions, and in this case, I think it somewhat hurts the reader’s view of the MC, though after the events, once you understand everything, it makes perfect sense.

The ending needed more closure, even if people will just roll straight into book 2 when it releases. When a bunch of cool things happen in the book, but the book ends before you can even get a taste of what it all means, you are left on the wrong kind of cliffhanger IMHO…in fact, the end of the book feels like it’s one cliffhanger removed from the real cliffhanger…which is a strange place to leave a book. But still, it hardly ruins it. I’m just annoyed I have to wait a few days yet for the release of book 2 ;) so it’s maybe a me problem and not a book issue.

None of those critiques will be an issue once a few more books are released, as people will read through the end right into the next book, so who cares?

Give it a listen. It’s really enjoyable. I cannot wait for more.

that's how it's done

fantastically written. a story of strong to stronger reincarnation. HOWEVER! The world and MC are written in a way that past strength, while absolutely useful is greatly limited in a way that actually makes sense.

the characters are all well written and feel like they have dimension. the magic system is interesting and the world building is mysteriously intriguing.

don't sleep on this one.

Checks every one of my boxes

I reeeeally want a second book. Wow. Literally, the only thing that I didn’t like was the way that the narrator pronounces “primer.” That’s IT.

It’s got a dash of everything I like. Isekai, academy, a nice spin on summoners, 4X war, financial struggle, mana system\points\shop\gods, dungeons, combat, Canadian(s)…

Good but doesn't finish an arc at all...

the story premise is good but the author keeps jumping from arc to arc and doesn't finish ine at all, I would like to think he's setting up for a larger story but it's still very convoluted. it's almost like different books in the series that he cut the endings to and stuck them all together...
