Publisher's Summary

"Narrator Susan Ericksen's performance vibrates with energy as she portrays old and new characters in this series."—AudioFile on Desperation in Death, an Earphones Award winner.

A retired colleague falls victim to a staged suicide in Payback in Death, the next police thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling author J.D. Robb.

Lt. Eve Dallas is just home from a long overdue vacation when she responds to a call of an unattended death. The victim is Martin Greenleaf, retired Internal Affairs Captain. At first glance, the scene appears to be suicide, but the closer Eve examines the body, the more suspicious she becomes.

An unlocked open window, a loving wife and family, a too-perfect suicide note—Eve's gut says it's a homicide. After all, Greenleaf put a lot of dirty cops away during his forty-seven years in Internal Affairs. It could very well be payback—and she will not rest until the case is closed.

Really enjoyed!

I think it was well written and made you think as so many characters could have “done it”! An enjoyable read and I have to say I also love Susan Erikson’s narration!

Love JD Robb!

I love a great number of Nora Roberts series but this is by FAR my favorite. I have all of them. In a variety of hardback, softcover, and audible. I didn't think I could like the audio at first now I've been getting back copies. This new one is great! I just love the way Eve's brain works. It's a frightening version of my own, so I can easily relate. Now I just need to find a Roarke. Especially with that sense of humor. The banter they have in this one had me laughing so loud when I was all alone in my apartment, I was actually embarrassed by myself! I just can’t wait for the next!

definitely a must read!

I was so very surprised by this book. Thank you. Finally, a murdered mystery, that was faster paced and not about police procedure. You were taken along for the ride. With the focus on the detective, it was well written..

There was romance, but it wasn't distracting, it complimented the story. The best part is that even though this is not the first book in this series, i wasn't lost. I didn't need to read the previous books in order to listen to this book and understand the relationships between the characters. I didn't have to have previous knowledge of any of the characters, everything just blended. There were funny parts. I loved her quirky personality. I love her partner's personality, her husband's personality.

The narrator ...wow, fantastic! the Irish accent, just the different characters. It was almost like it was read by more than one person. Fantastic book

Worth listening to

Some parts seemed to drag a bit but the narrator and the story were good.

Great story & listen

Yes, another great story by JD!
Lots of twists & turns in the investigation plus the human side of all the relationships within Dallas’ inner circle.
Susan Erickson is an outstanding narrator! Susan uses inflections, softness & compassion, as well as the hard & stern. She’s very adept at keeping the character voices consistent.

Virtuoso

There are artists and then there are gifted artists. Then, you will find another higher level that leaves the rest spinning in the dust. Susan Erickson brings every character to life in fascinating, exquisite detail. Thank god Nora Roberts is a fantastic writer because these excellent stories deserve no less, but Dear Susan. Susan is remarkable.

Another cliffhanger by Ms Roberts. Made even better by Susan Erickson and her storytelling excellence. Looking very forward to the next one.

Always love Eve and Roark but…

It drives me crazy that mistakes ( and so many in one chapter) make it through. They keep calling Lieutenant Webster by the wrong rank ( detective) throughout the whole book except a few tones when they get it right. It drives me nuts. Overall story is as good as always. Just that one detail makes me crazy every time they say it.
