About this listen
The tense, chilling story of four women haunted by a childhood trauma.
When they were children, Sae, Maki, Akiko, and Yuko were tricked into separating from their friend Emily by a mysterious stranger. Then the unthinkable occurred: Emily was found murdered hours later.
Sae, Maki, Akiko, and Yuko weren't able to accurately describe the stranger's appearance to the police after Emily's body was discovered. Asako, Emily's mother, cursed the surviving girls, vowing that they would pay for her daughter's murder.
Like Confessions, Kanae Minato's award-winning, internationally best-selling debut, Penance is a dark and voice-driven tale of revenge and psychological trauma that will leave listeners breathless.

Japanese Words Not Always Pronounced Correctly
There are quite a few Japanese words in this story that remained after translation. There aren't English equivalents for these words I realize, and the narrator DOES pronounce the characters' Japanese names correctly. However, the words that the narrator mispronounces appear frequently, and it was distracting. I think that this was distracting because I speak Japanese and English. I'm aware it's not easy to pronounce words in other languages, but perhaps there needs to be something that Audible (or the publisher or someone) provides to inform narrators of the correct pronunciation of non-English words. That may be asking too much, but I think it would improve the narrator's performance.

Great story, but the narrator was too much
For this story based on secrets and silence, not enough would have been better than too much. The narrator should have been realed back a little. Most of her female caracters interventions were on the teary/hysteric side and it pulled me out of the story everytime. Really annoying.
