Publisher's Summary

This superbly told story brings to life one of the most remarkable rulers––and men––in all of history and conveys the drama of his life and world. The Russia of Peter's birth was very different from the Russia his energy, genius, and ruthlessness shaped. Crowned co-Tsar as a child of ten, after witnessing bloody uprisings in the streets of Moscow, he would grow up propelled by an unquenchable curiosity, everywhere looking, asking, tinkering, and learning, fired by Western ideas.

We see Peter in his 20s traveling "incognito" with his ambassadors to the courts of Europe; as the victorious soldier proclaimed Emperor; as the simple workman at his forge; and as the visionary statesman who single-handedly created a formidable world power. Impetuous and stubborn, bawdy and stern, relentless in his perseverance, he was capable of the greatest generosity and the greatest cruelty.

Peter the Great transforms Russia

The book is a great biography of Peter the Great, the Czar that put Russia on the map of Europe. The author also expertly describes the leaders of all the other European powers of Peter's time. The characters include Charles 12th of Sweden, Louis 14th of France, William of Orange of England, Ahmed III, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and other notable figures. Together these characters played a fascinating chess game that this book covers in detail. it is very well. narrated by Frederick Davidson.

Well written

Outstanding biography which paints a picture of this incredible human, Russian culture and the world political landscape. It is a reminder of how in many ways little has changed in Russia.

Thorough and engaging

This Pulitzer-prize winning biography portrays not only Peter The Great, but the whole era around him in Europe and Asia.
Interesting details, many of which seem to have made their way into Game of Thrones.

Fantastic book of a remarkable sovereign

Historical non fiction that surpassed every fictional story. Peter was a man who transformed Russia for centuries to come, and still considered to be a role model for young generation nowadays.

Good content, terrible recording

The text of this story is fascinating and would be enjoyable for history lovers. However, the recording/narration is terrible. The narrator's voice does not vary in tone or pitch which makes this audio book more conducive to the audible sleep meditations. The quality of the recording actually makes it difficult to hear and understand - there is a lack of distinct consonants and I found myself having to listen hard and guess at some words. I will be returning this book if possible. Disappointed.
