 Fille de Minos et de Pasiphaé, Phèdre lutte en vain contre la passion qu'elle éprouve pour Hippolyte, le fils de Thésée dont elle est l'épouse. Épuisée et culpabilisée par ses sentiments qu'elle ne contrôle pas, elle cherche par tous les moyens à l'éloigner d'elle. Ce beau-fils, adulé et rejeté, a l'intention de quitter Trézène pour partir à la recherche de son père disparu, fuyant aussi par là son propre amour pour Aricie, s≈ìur des Pallantides, clan ennemi.
La mort que Phèdre implore pour expurger son crime sera retardée par l'annonce du retour de Thésée, après qu'elle a dévoilé ses sentiments à Hippolyte. Maudissant son fils qui l'aurait outragé, Thésée apprend trop tard son innocence - de la bouche même de Phèdre qui meurt à ses pieds.
