Publisher's Summary

The first book of the smash-hit Wayward Pines trilogy, from the New York Times bestselling author of Dark Matter, Recursion, and Upgrade

One way in. No way out.

Secret Service agent Ethan Burke arrives in Wayward Pines, Idaho, with a mission: locate two federal agents who went missing in the bucolic town one month earlier. But within minutes of his arrival, Ethan is involved in a violent accident. He comes to in a hospital, with no ID, no cell phone, and no briefcase.

As the days pass, Ethan’s investigation turns up more questions than answers: Why can’t he get any phone calls through to his wife and son in the outside world? Why doesn’t anyone believe he is who he says he is? And what is the purpose of the electrified fences surrounding the town? Are they meant to keep the residents in? Or something else out?

Each step closer to the truth takes Ethan farther from the world he knew, from the man he was, until he must face a horrifying fact—he may never get out of Wayward Pines alive.

The nail-bitingly suspenseful opening installment in Blake Crouch’s blockbuster Wayward Pines trilogy, Pines is at once a brilliant mystery tale and the first step into a genre-bending saga of suspense, science fiction, and horror.

Absolutely loved it!

Every time I read a Blake Couch book, I find myself a little more of a fan boy every time, although I've been warned that some of his earlier stuff isn't as well written, far more violent & disturbing than his later stuff. Pines opens up the Wayward Pines trilogy is fantastic form, with an intriguing premise offering more questions than answers that slowly reveal themselves throughout the book. This leads to one of the best twists in any I've read in a LONG time when the ending finally reveals the truth about the town of Wayward Pines...

The pace of the story is excellent & the characters are well fleshed out, especially leading man Ethan Burke, who's back story is very nuanced & plants the seeds for why & how he reacts/acts in certain situations. The narration was on point; nothing amazing but well done none the less. Story was very captivating & never dull, many twists & plot turns throughout the book keeping the reader/listener captivated until the end. As soon as it ended I was on to the second book immediately, so it did it's job in spades of hooking you in for what turns out to be one of the best trilogies that I've ever read. Highly recommended!

Loved it

Overall I enjoyed this story. I was disturbed by some of the violence and flashbacks but was able to get past it because of the ending.

A Really Good Story

I really enjoyed this. I like sci-fi and I like mystery, so this worked out great. I've seen some people complain that this seems like a really long action sequence and in a way it is. But it's the first book in a story about discovering something that really isn't right, and those that are part of it realizing that someone isn't buying the story. Relax and enjoy the imagination, I thought it was great.

Ugh!

Why? The listening with molar-grindingly bad, and far less rewarding than the equally bad TV show. :-(

Disappointing

The writing is fine overall. But for me it dragged at the beginning then was one unending action scene for the second half. The ending felt like it had a loose connection to the rest of the book. The narrator did a good job with the male voices but I didn’t love his female voices.
