About this listen
From the best-selling author of My Sister's Keeper comes the riveting story of a murder that shatters the picturesque calm of Amish country - and tests the heart and soul of the lawyer defending the woman at the center of the storm.
The discovery of a dead infant in an Amish barn shakes Lancaster County to its core. But the police investigation leads to a more shocking disclosure: Circumstantial evidence suggests that 18-year-old Katie Fisher, an unmarried Amish woman believed to be the newborn's mother, took the child's life. When Ellie Hathaway, a disillusioned big-city attorney, comes to Paradise, Pennsylvania, to defend Katie, two cultures collide - and for the first time in her high-profile career, Ellie faces a system of justice very different from her own. Delving deep inside the world of those who live "plain", Ellie must find a way to reach Katie on her terms. And as she unravels a tangled murder case, Ellie also looks deep within - to confront her own fears and desires when a man from her past reenters her life.

The perfect who-done-it book
Perfectly told by narrator, suspenseful novel of a community not very understood. Keeps you guessing who committed the crime and why; educates the reader on a small mostly forgotten religion.

Great fall read/listen
I listened to this whole book in about 4-5 days, very relatable characters and for some reason got me into a country-fall mood. I found this story to be less “rough” as some of Picoult’s other works even though it still deals with ethical dilemmas and was just as enjoyable.

I’m left dissatisfied
No doubt that Jodi Picoult is an excellent writer. I enjoyed the descriptions of the hutterites and the dairy farm - both of which I’m familiar and I enjoyed going back there. I had guessed very early on who was connected with the baby’s death and Katie definitely got annoying. One of my issues was with the narration —half the time, the lawyer sounded exactly like Katie.

Sooo great
The story is amazing (as are all of Mrs Picoult’s books) but I was exceptionally astounded by this one!
The voices sometimes were louder and then softer… which is a bit disturbing when I listen to the books while driving.. but this was a great (!!) one

Enjoyable Listen
I enjoyed this book. A couple of the revelations weren’t that revelatory, but still worth the listen. I’m not sure why there were two narrators, and I don’t think it was necessary. I definitely had a strong preference for one over the other.
