Start of a surprisingly dark series
Good audio performance. Story of book 1 is ok similar to some others game player stories, but book 2 oddly gets quite dark in subject matter and full of cursing, strange disappointing turn from how I thought book 1 was going pleasantly. Don't think I'll continue to book 3. So Start book 1 with the caution the story turns quite dark.

Really bad editing.
I could vividly hear everytime the narrator moistened his mouth and it was very gross hearing it and it would have been so easy for them to edit it out

More Than Serviceable
Rick Scar offers a fairly standard LitRPG story (translated from the Russian by Anastasia Kopletova) about a young gamer immersed in a VRMMO world. The game mechanics are uncomplicated, the quest-based gameplay is intuitive, and the writing - while a little bit sophomoric at times - is creditable. Less fortunately, the couple of innovations (adjustable player pain sensations; a multi-level tower matrix in the "Ascendency" game world) can't make up for the sheer familiarity of Scar's vision. I like that the metagame notifications (point buys, skill updates, etc.) didn't overwhelm the text, but the book didn't stand out.
Fortuitously for audiobook aficionados, reader James Fouhy does his best to help the situation. The man sounds remarkably like Scott Brick - demonstrating similar excellence in diction, tone, and voice-acting.. but also the too-slow reading rate and occasionally lilting iambic cadence. Listen to this one at 1.15X for the best experience.
Altogether, Book One of the 'Player Reached The Top' series merits 7.5 stars out of 10. It would be brilliant for a listener aged 11-14. It's not puerile, mind you.. just a touch too immature for an adult genre fan like myself (the themes get a little bit darker by the end of the book, but it still felt juvenile overall). Regardless, I am happy to have found it on the 'Plus' menu. It was an enjoyable way to spend a couple of quiet afternoons. If it leaves the catalog, however, better options await your Credit.
[NOTE: The gameworld structure (multiple "levels" in the tower only tenuously related to each other) is genius. Scar can keep writing in this reality with every entry feeling fresh and distinctive]

meh
the MC is terrible. if he doesn't get his way he becomes more vile then any villian in the so called story. when the MC is unbearable...not sure how this book has so many additions to its series.
