Publisher's Summary
NATIONAL BESTSELLER
For the first time in depth and in public, Olympic soccer gold-medalist Christine Sinclair, the top international goal scorer of all time and one of Canada's greatest athletes, reflects on both her exhilarating successes and her heartbreaking failures. Playing the Long Game is a book of earned wisdom on the value of determination and team spirit, and on leadership that changed the landscape of women's sport.
Christine Sinclair is one of the world's most respected and admired athletes. Not only is she the player who has scored the most goals on the international soccer stage, male or female, but more than two decades into her career, she is the heart of any team she plays on, the captain of both Canada's national team and the top-ranked Portland Thorns FC in the National Women's Soccer League.
Working with the brilliant and bestselling sportswriter Stephen Brunt, who has followed her career for decades, the intensely private Sinclair will share her reflections on the significant moments and turning points in her life and career, the big wins and losses survived, not only on the pitch. Her extraordinary journey, combined with her candor, commitment and decency, will inspire and empower her fans and admirers, and girls and women everywhere.

Growing up on a First Nation reserve, young Ted Nolan built his own backyard hockey rink and wore skates many sizes too big. But poverty wasn’t his biggest challenge. Playing the game meant spending his life in two worlds: one in which he was loved and accepted and one where he was often told he didn’t belong. Ted proved he had what it took, joining the Detroit Red Wings in 1978. But when his on-ice career ended, he discovered his true passion wasn’t playing; it was coaching.

Story
SEPTEMBER 2, 1972, MONTREAL FORUM, GAME ONE: The best against the best for the first time. Canada, the country that had created the game; the Soviet Union, having taken it up only twenty-six years earlier. On the line: more than the players, more than the fans, more than Canadians and Russians knew. So began an entirely improbable, near-month-long series of games that became more and more riveting, until, for the eighth, and final, and deciding game—on a weekday, during work and school hours all across the country—the nation stopped.

Yet perhaps most uniquely, different from anyone else who has ever lived or ever will again, he has continuously experienced the best of hockey since he was fourteen years old.

What the critics say
“[A] captivatingly honest read. . . . This is one of the most unassuming superstars you'll ever come across, and her story of going from a kid from Burnaby, B.C., to one of the greatest to ever do it is special because she has nothing but time for the people who helped and stood alongside her every step of the way.” —CBC
“Playing the Long Game is an essential read for fans of Canada women’s soccer seeking further insights from the perspective of its standard-bearer. It’s a look into the past and a peek behind the curtain of a private professional athlete, offering a unique approach to a memoir for someone who never thought she’d write one.” —The Oregonian

I was disappointed that Christine did not narrate this book but after listening I understand that her Mom had just passed and she likely wasn’t up to doing the audio book.

Inspiring memoir
Christine Sinclair is a Canadian superstar and role model for aspiring athletes. I've followed the Canadian Women's team with my children since the 90s (Charmaine Hooper) and Christine and her team mates since the amazing U19 World Cup final in 2002. It's a wonderful personal story of women’s soccer in Canada through the eyes of Canada's best player ever.
The book is well written and the narration is excellent.
I support Christine's fight for equality for girls and women at all levels of soccer. The Canadian Soccer Association has been disgraceful in their unequal support for the Women's team for decades, considering the women put Canadian soccer on the world map, the only beacon for all these years.
The men's team has been useless. And has a long way to go to be anywhere near comparable to the women. (I can't believe the ridiculous excitement around them "making" the 2022 World Cup.... and that they scored a goal ... )

More of and ode to her coaches
If you’re looking to learn about Christine Sinclair‘s journey as a soccer player in soccer games and experiences with coaches and games then this is a book for you. This book lacks vulnerability or the personal story of Christine’s journey but that was really the point I believe as she is ‘business focused’. Still interesting tho :)
