In Powerful Women of the Ancient World, Professor Kara Cooney will share the stories of women who rose to power through ambition; intelligence; skill; and sheer determination. First, you will take a look at what power actually is - how it is defined, how different kinds of power operate, and why women and men are often viewed differently when power is involved. Then, meet the women of the ancient world who challenged the status quo by grasping for and holding authority. Some names listeners will likely already recognize through their “cautionary tales”, such as Cleopatra and Jezebel. Others, though less well-known, will show you the different ways it is possible to be powerful. You will meet rulers like Empress Lü of China and Hatshepsut of Egypt, rebel leaders such as Boudica of Britain, religious leaders like the Hebrew prophetess Deborah, and more.
As listeners will learn, times may have changed since antiquity, but the past has a long reach - and in many ways, our cultural ideas about women and power are surprisingly slow to change.

very interesting
I loved this. it's way more about political strategy than I was expecting, but certainly sheds light on how we move in the world as women (& how we see each other and are perceived!) today and throughout history. Great read, highly recommended.

I wish we progressed more than the fact that we haven't much since then.
She may be quiet at times, but she has a strong voice when it comes to her belief that the modern world hasn't advanced much from ancient times.
I find her perspective rather fascinating, especially when she shares stories about the different politics from both eras.
It's all speculation, but I can't help but be impressed by her insights.

Worth The Listen!
Kara Cooney did a great job! Would love to see 'The Great Courses' produce more volumes about powerful and notable women.

Terrific lecture series
I just enjoyed this series so much. The repression and hate red of women in power goes back a long way.
The performance and story are so powerfully expressed.

Fasciniating!
I have always loved ancient history, particularly women's history and reality, and how it compares to us today. This book is beautifully written, honest, insightful and surprisingly relevant.

interesting and infuriating at the same time
interesting but also infuriating. its incredible to see how little progress we have made at times when comparing ourselves to ancient civilizations. The narrator does a great job but sometimes she is hard to listen to. She starts sentences quite loud but by the end of the sentence she is quiet and hard to hear. I would often miss what she said and would have to rewind which became frustrating
