Publisher's Summary

A New York Times bestseller!

This sparkling edition includes a special case stamping, bonus content, and a teaser to book two in this heart-pounding series!

Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas, this young adult fantasy follows the forbidden romance between a powerful prince and an ordinary girl as they try to survive their kingdom’s grueling laws pitting them against each other.

She is the very thing he’s spent his whole life hunting.
He is the very thing she’s spent her whole life pretending to be.

Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya—the exceptional, the empowered, the Elites. The powers these Elites have possessed for decades were graciously gifted to them by the Plague, though not all were fortunate enough to both survive the sickness and reap the reward. Those born Ordinary are just that—ordinary. And when the king decreed that all Ordinaries be banished to preserve his Elite society, lacking an ability suddenly became a crime—making Paedyn Gray a felon by fate and a thief by necessity.

Surviving in the slums as an Ordinary is no simple task, and Paedyn knows this better than most. Having been trained by her father to be keenly observant since she was a child, Paedyn poses as a Psychic in the crowded city, blending in with the Elites as best she can to stay alive and out of trouble…easier said than done.

When Paeydn unsuspectingly saves one of Ilya’s princes, she finds herself thrown into the Purging Trials. The brutal competition exists to showcase the Elites’ powers—the very thing Paedyn lacks. If the Trials and the opponents within them don’t kill her, the prince she’s fighting feelings for certainly will if he discovers what she is…completely Ordinary.

Well performed but writing was lacking IMO

(I returned the book after about a third of the book.) The book was performed very well in my honest opinion... and the author did well setting scenes but the dialog was stale and cringy. i wasn't interested in the well foreseen redemption of characters... Nor can i overlook the glaring plot hole in the interactions between 2 of the main characters.

Good if your into the enemies to lovers trope, but for me it left little to be desired.

100% Would Recommend

First of all THE TENSION between Kai and Paedyn is very well written, i thought it was going to be overwhelming with all the tropes but god Lauren did an incredible job. I can appreciate a good “i’m a feminist obviously, but I wouldn’t really mind him saving me” moment but I feel like Paedyn deserves to save herself a little more, she’s definitely capable but she seems to often get saved which is the only thing I hope to see some growth in during Reckless. I do occasionally feel like some romantic lines are the book feel “cringy” but the world building, the twists and general story line is incredible so it didn’t make me falter too much. Also, i’m the same age as Lauren and saw her giving us spoilers of the book for like two years now, this was an incredible decision on Simon and Schuster for picking her up AND BRINGING HER BOOK TO AUDIBLE!! She is doing an amazing job and I cannot wait to see how these characters evolve!

Overall a great listen

I really enjoyed this story! Theres definitely room for improvement, I wish the author had of gone more into depth with the characters and settings. Overall there’s a lot of potential here for a great series and I’ll definitely be watching out for the next book.

Definitely YA coded

Not my favourite book by any means, narration was mid, storyline was confusing and cringe most of the time. Had potential!

Loved the dual perspective

The tension was amazingly written. The reasoning behind the actions and thoughts of the characters made sense. I was completely captivated throughout the whole book!

Perfect choice for Fantasy beginners

This was the perfect choice as the first book of my new romantasy book club, Myths & Dreams.

The best part about the book?
The tension!!! The banter!!! Kai!!! 😍🔥🥵

The world building was so easy to understand, and the characters were well written. It might actually be one of the good "intro to fantasy" books for those who are looking to dip their toes into the genre.

The angst and slowburn are to die for. It had one of the best banters I've read over time. Kai and Paedyn just fit perfectly well. Pae is a badass FMC who's also funny and vulnerable. Kai is charismatic, charming, and has a way with words. I'm not sure how I feel about Kitt. I feel bad for him but also maybe not?

"Why did I ever think I could have her, ever think she would have me? Because beasts don't get the beauty." **screaming**

TENSION!!! (Spoiler free)

The tension in this book was great. LOTS of buildup- LOTS of flirting. At some points, though, I found it quite repetitive. There were moments when they would be flirting and teasing one another and I would be thinking “oh get on with it and stop feeding the same lines for the tenth time”. I do like how the characters interact, their chemistry was great and overall the book was solid. The fight scenes were great too. Reminded me a lot of the hunger games but a bit less YA since there’s more romantic aspects (in my opinion).
