Prepare to Avoid This Cash-in

You might think from the title that this is some sort of sequel to David K's classic book "Masters of Doom". This is a collection of magazine articles on video games that the author wrote before writing Masters. Only a couple of the articles are Doom related and any info in them is already in Masters. The rest of the "book" is a random collection of interviews with unconnected game devs. I wish I could give it 1.5 stars for "Meh". You'll probably have a better time with Console Wars, Ultimate History of Video Games, or practically any other book on video games on the site. #Audible1

Interesting but not a full story

Despite what the title indicates, there is only one story about DOOM and id Software in this book. This is a compilation of various articles and essays from the author of Masters of DOOM that appeared in serious publications over the years. They vary quite a bit in what they cover but they're all white interesting snippets of different times in the video game industry. Unfortunately, some of them appear to be abridged versions (or maybe they just end abruptly.) This is more for hardcore game industry history buffs than those whom Masters of DOOM appealed to but if you're one of those people like I am, it is a good listen, even if the amount of content you get for your money/credit is a bit thin.

Similar to Masters of DOOM, Wil Wheaton does a great job at narration. A bit funny to me that he did this since around 2014 (a year before this book's production) is when he developed a pretty profound and unwarranted profound hatred of gamers and gaming culture.

This could have been better and I think it's overpriced for what you get but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Disappointing nonsequel, focused on forgotten fads

Where as "masters of dooms" focused on narrative around John and John, this novel is nothing but a collection of short stories (pulled from magazine articles).

Many of the articles focus on things that would have been passe even 6 years ago. Where doom is evergreen, something we enjoy even 3 decades on, I don't who is excited for the "scoop" on flappy bird, rock band, or neopets.

Will Wheaton (shut up Wesley) does a serviceable job as narrator, but some of his accents are cringe worthy.
