I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Uniquely fascinating with a taste of bitter
I read the reviews and was stumped by a few that mentioned the the narrator’s presentation jarring. The narrator was perfect for this genre. Excellent job. I had also bought the book and I could see as I read the book and listened to the audio presentation that Mr. Clamp brought an artistic cadence perfect for the delivery. I’ve already purchased second audio book in this series. High praise.

Brilliant writing and narration
I understand this book won’t suit everyone as it is quite dark and cynical, as well as deep and intelligent. But I loved it very very very much. The narrator just absolutely nails it. I couldn’t imagine anyone doing a better job of Jorg than James Clamp did here.
Discovering this book yielded many rewards for me. Not only the Broken Empire series itself, but also Lawrence’s other works, the Tower of Babel series (absolutely incredible), as well as several other books that Mark Lawrence recommended. I’m so glad I stumbled upon this book!

A grimdark classic
Lawerence sets the bar high. A poor twisted character you cannot help but feel for. A beautiful and intriguing world. This is dark. If you are weak. It is not for you. If you understand it is a book. A story and you are not a simpleton. Then please read on.
