About this listen
"The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country." (Edward Bernays)
A seminal and controversial figure in the history of political thought and public relations, Edward Bernays pioneered the scientific technique of shaping and manipulating public opinion, which he famously dubbed the "engineering of consent". During World War I, he was an integral part of the US Committee on Public Information, or CPI, a powerful propaganda apparatus that was mobilized to package, advertise, and sell the war to the American people as one that would "Make the World Safe for Democracy". The CPI became the blueprint for the marketing strategies of future wars.
Bernays applied the techniques he had learned in the CPI and, incorporating some of the ideas of Walter Lipmann, became an outspoken proponent of propaganda as a tool for democratic and corporate manipulation of the population. His 1928 bombshell, Propaganda, lays out his eerily prescient vision for using propaganda to regiment the collective mind in a variety of areas, including government, politics, art, science, and education. To listen to this book today is to frightfully comprehend what our contemporary institutions of government and business have become in regard to the organized manipulation of the masses.

vision of the anointed
Bernays was clearly evil. interesting, in a sickening way. a textbook case of Sowell's "vision of the anointed".

Worth the time and Money
It is worth your time as a pice of the puzzle to build a complete picture of how companies and governments use information to form your opinions.
Use it as a way to help inoculate your mind against manipulation.
The Author was a socialist masquerading as a capitalist.

Love the narration
In a happy mishap of reading the wrong date I assumed this book was modern but read by a narrator who had an early nineteen fifty's voice and cadence. This made the message evermore eerie and surprisingly accurate for our times. Discovering that the book was in fact written in the nineteen twenties made far more sense and also made the book much more poignant.

a modern-day sophist
this book is primarily of historical interest. in this text, Edward Bernays attempts to revive the term propaganda, defending the need 4 specialized propagandists 2 manipulate and guide the uneducated masses. most of the book focuses on public relations with regards to business interest, but several of the chapters also deal with the place of propaganda in Democratic societies and the use of propaganda for laudable social causes..

Propaganda, and its uses on the public
Bernays' expose on propaganda gives not only insight into how it is used, but the mindset of those in power who use it, and those who are subject to it...most all people in society.
