Publisher's Summary
A USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and Amazon Charts bestseller.
International bestselling author Patricia Cornwell delivers pulse-pounding thrills in the first book in a series featuring a brilliant and unusual new heroine, cutting-edge cybertechnology, and stakes that are astronomically high.
On the eve of a top secret space mission, Captain Calli Chase detects a tripped alarm in the tunnels deep below a NASA research center. A NASA pilot, quantum physicist, and cybercrime investigator, Calli knows that a looming blizzard and government shutdown could provide the perfect cover for sabotage, with deadly consequences.
As it turns out, the danger is worse than she thought. A spatter of dried blood, a missing security badge, a suspicious suicide—a series of disturbing clues point to Calli’s twin sister, Carme, who’s been MIA for days.
Desperate to halt the countdown to disaster and to clear her sister’s name, Captain Chase digs deep into her vast cyber security knowledge and her painful past, probing for answers to her twin’s erratic conduct. As time is running out, she realizes that failure means catastrophe—not just for the space program but for the safety of the whole nation.
Brilliantly crafted, gripping, and smart, Patricia Cornwell’s cliffhanger ending will keep listeners wondering what’s next for Captain Calli Chase.
What the critics say
"Thriller fans are in for a treat as narrator January LaVoy performs Patricia Cornwell's latest.... LaVoy is a vocal shape-shifter gliding between fluid narrative; the staccato, gravelly voice of Calli's sister, Fran, a police officer; gruff male characters; and Calli's increasing paranoia. As Calli follows the trail left by her missing sister, LaVoy's tones echo her growing distrust—of herself." (AudioFile Magazine)

Disappointed
I was enjoying the story line and then it felt like the book just ended abruptly. Definitely different from her other novels.

If you want a lecture in basic psychology delivered by a frantic woman who's about to start crying, this is the book for you. The main character constantly pontificates about what people must have been thinking and the story barely goes anywhere. I chose this because I really enjoyed Postmortem, but I couldn't even finish this one.

irritatingly slow
Irritating, almost OCD level of irrelevent detail. worst i have read in a long time. plot is slow to build, then ends suddenly without adequate explanation or closure.
Huge plot errors and garbage science.

Meh... not great.
She dwells on run flat tires and counting down to the millisecond. The voices used by the narrator don't match the personalities, really whiney in most instances. I don't recommend it. Not the quality of story that I have come to expect from this author.

What has happened to Patricia Cornwell?
I loved her Scarpetta series...until it went of the rails with an increasingly paranoid, neurotic cast of characters. I had high hopes for this book, a new series, a new character, maybe a change in the writing style.
Boy was I disappointed. Same old crazy, neurotic main character, bizarrely angry and aggressive best friend, rambling, wordy, no real action to speak of AND NO ENDING!!!! What kind of author writes a book that doesn't tie up a single loose end by the last page. I can see leaving a couple of things hanging to keep running with the series, but there's NOTHING.
I don't know what happened to Patricia Cornwell to change her writing style so dramatically and drastically that there is literally nothing redeeming about, but this was the last chance. I won't look at another one of her books. And the narration gives me pause to get another book narrated by January LaVoy. Overly dramatic way, way beyond realistic, ugh.

Quantum
I believe the download was defective because the first half of the book repeated on the second half of the book. Therefore, I have no real grasp of the story or where it goes. Usually I enjoy her stories.

Weak Story
This was not a good book. The narration dragged on and on, and the characters were overly dramatic and underdeveloped.
