About this listen

It's easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, he said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily...BUT WHO DO YOU KNOW WHO LIVES LIKE THAT? DO YOU?

In Radical, David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple--then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. And he tells the dramatic story of what is happening as a "successful" suburban church decides to get serious about the gospel according to Jesus. Finally, he urges you to join in The Radical Experiment: a one-year journey in authentic discipleship that will transform how you live in a world that desperately needs the Good News Jesus came to bring.

Radical - read with caution. It will rock you.

I liked the way David Platt challenged me about the way I/we do Christianity in N. America. Our emphasis on individuality and maintaining our level of comfort... There may be a better way, and he directs us through an alternative approach to living our faith. Thank you, David, for being passionate and willing to call us to much more for our here and now! By God’s Grace and for His glory, Amen

Challenged my thinking

Challenging to listen to because it challenged some of things I have become comfortable with in my life. I was really glad that near the end David had some practical action steps that a person can take. I am going to consider the challenge to take those practical steps. I am willing to bet implementing them will make a world of a difference I my life.

A narrow understanding of the “American Dream” and the gospel leading to narrow conclusions

David makes some spicy rebukes of the American church, but in the end lands on a troublingly narrow theology obsessed extravagant travels to “unreached peoples” and acts of blatant evangelism covered in a veneer of modest living.

In his well intentioned critique of Western materialism, he passes by a more holistic understanding of the American dream and it’s roots— neglecting notions of manifest destiny, systems of inequity, interactions between capitalism and Christian industrial complex, self-serving and self-sustaining power structures, and notions of so-called spiritual authority.

Perhaps before devoting such a great deal of importance to exporting our gospel to “unreached peoples”, we need to ensure our gospel is rid of more than just American materialism and is rather wholly steeped in kingdom justice.
