About this listen

The Great War is over, and change is in the air in this novel that brings to life the exciting days of early British radio...and one woman who finds her voice while working alongside the brilliant women and men of the BBC.

London, 1926. American-raised Maisie Musgrave is thrilled to land a job as a secretary at the upstart British Broadcasting Corporation, whose use of radio - still new, strange, and electrifying - is captivating the nation. But the hectic pace, smart young staff, and intimidating bosses only add to Maisie's insecurity.

Soon she is seduced by the work - gaining confidence as she arranges broadcasts by the most famous writers, scientists, and politicians in Britain. She is also caught up in a growing conflict between her two bosses: John Reith, the formidable director-general of the BBC; and Hilda Matheson, the extraordinary director of the hugely popular Talks programming, who both have very different visions of what radio should be. Under Hilda's tutelage, Maisie discovers her talent, passion, and ambition. But when she unearths a shocking conspiracy, she and Hilda join forces to make their voices heard both on and off the air...and then face the dangerous consequences of telling the truth for a living.

Well read and well researched

I really enjoyed the weaving of fiction with historical people and events in this book! I hadn’t thought much about the history of the BBC and this has me wanting to learn more. Further, I think there are some good themes in this book that parallel our recent and current times.

Maarleveld is so good at creating different voices for each character and I felt like everyone was distinct!

Great story!

Very interesting and well written. Based on actual people and a lot of truth weaved into the story. Cudos to the BBC in its early days employing women in important positions and paying them equally. We are talking about the 1930’s! Quickly moving story, where you see the characters grow. Beautifully narrated by Saskia Maarleveld. She seamlessly moves from one voice to another. She also has a lovely voice. Great read. I highly recommend it

Very interesting listening

The book is very well written, researched and read. I kept coming back to the book as soon as I could to continue listening. It has most definitely made me curious about the history of BBC. The characters are so well written and story line is strong. It is interesting to read about the struggles of capable and talented women in male dominated organizations and how they paved a way for other women. Very inspiring. Looking forward to reading mor e books from Sarah-Jane Stratford. Saskia Maarleveld is fantastic as always. She is the reason I chose this book.
