About this listen
Current child-rearing techniques seek to develop children who are confident, self-assured, and unafraid to speak their minds-lions instead of lambs. Although largely positive, this shift has brought with it some very serious problems in our children's behavior. Without going back to an authoritarian model, Joe Newman has developed new ways of helping children develop the ability to self-regulate without undermining their confidence, and individuality.
“One of the best books on child-rearing. Joe Newman describes a cultural shift that has reinforced anxiety and behavior disorders in children by negating parental authority. Even more important, he provides specific, non-punitive ways for parents to help their kids by taking back their authority. Filled with examples and experiences from the author’s own life as a child with A.D.H.D., the book is a treasure-trove of useful information.” (Barry Michels, psychotherapist and New York Times bestselling author of The Tools)
“This book is packed with useful information. It is an insightful and practical guide for managing children. I would recommend it to any parent.” (L. Alan Sroufe, Professor Emeritus Ph.D. University of Minnesota)
Raising Lions challenges us to re-examine our interactions and relationships with children, re-think the root causes of behavior problems, and find new ways to support healthy, happy development.
For over 20 years Joe Newman has worked with children, parents, teachers, and administrators to help them understand and improve child behavior.

great concept!
from the first few chapters I already have tools excited to implement. the idea that kids need to learn to be interdependent is eye opening. I feel like I learnt a lot about my own upbringing in this book

Straight forward plan
This was a short audio book, which I appreciated because the principles and tools are straight forward. I feel like as a stand-alone approach, it might be difficult for parents to implement. But I've got a 7yo and twin 5yos and have read plenty of parenting books. This feels like a missing piece that can support the other parenting tools I've developed.
My oldest has been diagnosed with ADHD, is in assessment for autism, and has been through several traumatic experiences so that I suspect PTSD or another trauma disorder is at play. They can be a huge handful and we had several violent crises in the past. This is the first book I feel goes past the needs of the average child and acknowledges that some kids are more than a handful and gives actual solutions.
I like that it was read by the author because I can tell from how he read it that he doesn't put up with anyone's BS--children or parents--and the inflection makes me trust that he can teach me how to handle my spirited kid.

Very helpful for parents!
Great book for understanding and dealing with children with "problem behavior". I used the methods with my child and saw improvements.

A good book to have in the library, will listen again.
I enjoyed Joe’s voice, I liked that there were many different scenarios and ages that he discusses in the book. I’ve started using this approach with my 3 year old and am already seeing results. Thank you Joe
