Publisher's Summary

At 30 years old, Phil is an unemployed gamer who struggles to make ends meet. His only source of income is freelance writing (when he feels inspired enough to add another article to his less-than-popular blog). His wife has just walked out on him, leaving him without money, purpose, or food in the fridge.

On the day his wife dumps him, Phil receives a mysterious piece of wetware. A game interface seems to have been implanted in his brain, which allows him to see the world through the eyes of an RPG player.

Now that Phil discovers his real-life stats, he can see they're far below average. With 4 pt. Agility, 6 pt. Strength, and 3 pt. Stamina, his most advanced life skill is predictably gaming.

Luckily, real-life stats can be leveled up just like virtual ones. But will it help Phil get his wife back? Can he stop being such a couch potato? Would the new game help him become fitter? Or more successful? Can his gaming skills finally come in handy in real life?

Last but not least, can he find out who could have uploaded the mysterious game to his brain? And how is he supposed to deal with this unknown but apparently omnipotent force?

not the regular Litrpg

it’s refreshing to get something new from a concept that’s being use to many time but there is missing just something i wish the following books will have it

A different take on LitRPG

This novel reminds me of "I'm really a superstar", one of the very first online novels I read all those years ago. How nostalgic.
While the novel is indeed a LitRPG, it doesn't have the excessive fantasy elements involved, it's more urban if anything. What sets it apart from the more common or mainstream novels of this genre, is that it's more of a self/humanity improvement type of novel So don't expect to see any dungeon diving, boss fights, monster grinding, or even player killing for that matter, in the first book at least. There were some sneak preview of super powers and potential alien civilization, so who knows what the following volumes will bring out.
The idea of watching a trash of society grow into a respectable human being in a modern or urban setting might not seem appealing to some people, and that's understandable. But I have to say that it was satisfying to watch the MC uplift himself and break the shackles that bound him to fmhis current dismal reality, with a little help from the system of course.
The narrator was pretty good too. His voice overs, tonation, and emotion control were excellent 👍.
Overall, I'd definitely recommend this book. Just look, it's 7:43 AM right now, this book robbed me of an entire night's sleep 😪.
7 hours 31 mins and 30 seconds, worth every second 👍.

Enjoyable

This was a good first book. More realistic approach getting an interface implanted in your brain. Not too fantastical and fake and over the top. It’s actually good and can make you think of how you would handle such an event.

Breath of Fresh Air

I loved the change in pace and the humanity/reality of the setting and situations. Was a very good pace and enjoyed the process.

It's a Slow One

This isn't really a LitRPG in the typical sense. It's more of a sci-fi coming of age with a game interface background. Don't expect an action packed romp, or any real combat or monsters (just a few human thugs at most). Slow start, followed by a slower burn. There's a very good story in there, buried behind several layers of meandering side plots, failed relationships, and a "lovable loser" type MC, more loser than lovable, really. Taken with that expectation, it's still slow, but worth a free read.

Or you could just start with Book 3 and avoid all the build-up by reading the summary. I just started Book 3 and it opens with the "Everything so far has been the Tutorial" type twist. If Book 3 opens with Character Creation, that's 2 full books that could easily have been opening chapters. Cool enough, but definitely do not expect the fast pace of your typical LitRPG.

Very enjoyable!

While not super light hearted or anything it doesn't get too dark either. The progression was very enjoyable. The whole series is great but it gets better with each book. I think I'd love a sequel trilogy. It is originally in Russian so there's quite a disparity in social norms and triggering for the overly woke.

fresh an gripping

I am a avid consumer of litRPGs.
I love them. with 100s of hours of listening I've gravitated away for the VR video game types towards more real world/ stakes type stories. the type where you don't get to respawn.
This is the first story I have heard that is in the real, unchanged world. A normal life but with the added rpg profession for the MC. It feels new and refreshing.
looking forward to see what happens in book 2.

Not my usual listen. But enjoyable and heartwarming

That other review with the low star rating is actually what convinced me to try listening to this. Not sure why they are upset about it. The book description accurately represents what you get. It’s not action or even really a sci-fi. It’s about someone who gains a new method of looking at life and turns his life around.

Usually I wouldn’t go for this type of book. But the rpg framework seemed to keep me just as interested in listening as it helped motivate the main character.

What's with all these 5 star reviews?

This book goes nowhere, I literally sat here waiting for something meaning full besides;
"You've gained 2000 experience points for completing a socially meaningful action"
How boring, I mean really? This is just a book about a guy going through his day to day actions and getting exp and a level here and there. 15hours of my life I will never get back.
You gain some kind of super computer in your head and the first thing you would do is use it to help a bunch of criminals get a job? Lmao ok. I'm done.
