Very fun for also having big lore and drama
The strength of this book is in the characters, but there's also some very strong worldbuilding going on and each of those elements does a lot to round out and enhance the other.
Izra and Oren have a nice playful dynamic. It's very "opposites attract" in a way that lets them soften each other out and they have some really wonderful dialogue together. The supporting characters are fantastic (I'm even more excited to spend time with Luan Zek in Reclaimed, now) and the standout for me is Izra's sister Odrika (Odriga? Audibooks sometimes lose spelling, alas). I also want to mention that playing with "fate" as a concept is a GAMBLE sometimes, either forcing down the stakes or making the characters feel impotent, but Reborn falls into none of those pitfalls. Lots of interesting lore going on, too. It was a really fun read.
Also - the audiobook performance is FANTASTIC. Gary Furlong doesn't just "do the voices" - there's really only about four accents between all the characters - he actually goes to the trouble of acting the dialogue, and tone is enough of an indicator of who's POV we're in in third person limited prose. Chef's kiss, beautiful work.
