Publisher's Summary

A Broadway actress has a chance at stardom when cast by a major Hollywood director, but the role of her dreams may cost her the love of a lifetime in this epic novel from "one of the finest romance writers of our age." (Entertainment Weekly)

For months I stood by, an understudy waiting in the wings, preparing for my time to shine. I never imagined he would watch in the audience that night.

Canon Holt. Famous film director. Fascinating. Talented. Fine.

Before I could catch my breath, everything changed. I went from backstage Broadway to center stage Hollywood. From being unknown, to my name, Neevah Saint, on everyone's lips when Canon casts me in a star-studded Harlem Renaissance biopic.

But stars shine brightest in the dead of night. Forbidden attraction, scandal and circumstances beyond my control jeopardize my dream. Could this one shot—the role of a lifetime, the love of a lifetime—cost me everything?

Absolutely spectacular!!

In her author’s note, Kennedy Ryan calls this book “A love letter to Black creatives”. That is exactly how this comes across, a beautiful love letter that weaves a story through the lives of three Black creatives.

This is the story of Dessi Blue, an exceptionally talented Black musician, whose career catapulted in Europe because her artistry was overshadowed by racism in the U.S. Dessi has a fantastic story, which is told by the other MCs as they endeavour to make a film that captures her life, her loves and her dedication to her career as an artist.

This is a story about Neevah Saint, an undiscovered talent who catches Canon’s eye, and later his heart. She is a brilliant performer, and an exceptional human. She has the heart of an angel and the strength of a warrior. She is an icon herself, not just playing one.

This is also the story of Canon Holt, an acclaimed film director whose passion is bringing light to the issues and people often forgotten. His commitment to accurate storytelling and filling in the gaps that history often forgets - in this case Dessi, is inspiring. His commitment to Neevah…. Nothing short of spectacular.

What a joy it is to engage in this story. Tragedy, triumph, joy, grief, tears and laughter aplenty! Neevah and Canon are the very definition of unconditional love.

The audiobook version to this is SOOO special!!! I felt like I was listening to magic being made. ✨ It won The 2022 Audie award for Romance, in recognition of its beauty. The story completely envelops you, the narrators are incredible, and you can truly visualize the scenes unfolding around you. There is even singing! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽

This eclipses the definition of romance in my opinion. It is a tribute to those who put their all into honing their craft, and a tribute also to those enduring chronic illnesses.

I was so moved and inspired by this story. They amazed me with their strength and their ability to adapt to whatever life threw at them. This story is everything, and nothing short of magnificent! 🙌🏽
